Sunday

BRAINERD, Minn. In the final results from Brainerd Int'l Raceway and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes, Kevin Moore and Gene Mosbek took home wins and the championship NHRA Wally trophies.

 

Moore, who is the defending NHRA West Central Division Lucas Oil champion, grabbed his second win in a row taking out Rick Bowman in Super Gas. The Littleton, Colo., racer took the early lead and held on with a 9.915 second pass at 162.84 mph in his '34 Chevrolet. Bowman crossed the line in his '59 Corvette at 9.934, 155.38. Moore took the win last month at S.R.C.A. Dragstrip.

 

Mosbek, Elk River, Minn., faced off will fellow Minnesota racer Jason DeForrest, Andover, Minn., in Super Stock with his '67 Savoy crossing the line ahead of DeForrest. Mosbek went 10.188 at 128.73 mph. This was DeForrest's second final round in as many races as he joined Moore in the winner's circle at S.R.C.A.

 

Matt Harris faced off with 2006 NHRA division champion Clint Sallee in the Comp Eliminator final round with Harris, Nebraska City, Neb., taking the easy win right off the line when Sallee turned on the red-light with a foul start. Harris coasted across the finish line in his '05 Grand Am for the win.

 

Three more home state racers won this weekend as Brian Johnson, Anoka, Minn., took the Super Comp title, Donnie Durenberger, Dayton, Minn., beat Keith Hildahl, Northfield, Minn., in Super Street, and Kyle Lundberg, Isanti, Minn., beat Jayme Bode, in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson. Johnson beat division champ Chris Brown with a 0.018 second package running 8.903 on the 8.90 dial, Durenberger won on a double break-out, and Lundberg defeated Brown in a close one on his '10 Hayabusa.

 

Larry Piper continued his winning ways taking the win in the Fineline Madcap Top Dragster. Piper, who won the NHRA national event last month in Topeka, Kan., held on to beat Don Kritzky with a lap of 7.234 seconds at 179.66 mph.

 

The final wins went to Rich Smith in the Jerry Haas Racecars Top Sportsman class and Tim Lisson in Stock Eliminator. Smith, Wentzville, Mo., beat the defending event champion Dave Slatten in 7.166 seconds at 196.59 mph while Lisson won with a 0.012 second hole shot over Tyler Wudarczyk.

 

NHRA West Central Division racers head to Bandimere Speedway later this month for their next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 14-16 where they will be joined by the Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series.  Up next for BIR is their NHRA Drags: Street Legal Style event on Wednesday, June 5, followed by their bracket racing series June 7-9.

BRAINERD, Minn. - Racing kicked off today for the NHRA West Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes with more than 300 racers expected to battle the quarter mile this weekend at Brainerd International Raceway. 

Racers in Comp Eliminator, the Fineline Madcap Top Dragsters and the Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman took to the track today for qualifying as all three classes set their fields for Sunday's eliminations.  The weekend is a dual event weekend at BIR with the Ducati Superbikes in action on the 2.5 mile competition road course. 

Gates open at 7 a.m. on Sunday with racing set to begin at 9 a.m.  Tickets are $25 for adults, children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.  Brainerd International Raceway is located a few miles north of the Brainerd area off Highway 371.  The track is located on the east side of the highway.  For more information call BIR (866) 444-4455 or visit www.brainerdracewayandresort.com

BRAINERD, Minn. - Thunder at the Lakes arrives at Brainerd International Raceway on June 1-2, 2013.  The event is the second of six in the division and one of 44 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division's Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman, Fineline Madcap Top Dragster and Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson are also in competition.

BONUS  PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND
: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2013 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2013 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2013 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2013 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

AEROMOTIVE LOW QUALIFIER BONUS: A $3,000 bonus fund paid to the low qualifiers in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator at each of the division's six races. The best qualifying driver in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock will each get $200 per event, while the best qualifier in Stock Eliminator will get $100 per race.

JERRY HAAS RACE CARS TOP SPORTSMAN SERIES presented by Aeromotive: The Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman Series, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in the West Central division's Top Sportsman class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $2,750 champions' purse posted by Jerry Haas Race Cars will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers.

FINELINE GRAPHICS & MADCAP RACING ENGINES TOP DRAGSTER SERIES: The West Central Division Top Dragster Series, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in the West Central division's Top Dragster class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $2,750 champions' purse will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers.

NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $14,000 champions' purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
