 Preview

ATCO, N.J. -- Atco Raceway will host the first of two NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series events scheduled at the facility, June 19-21, 2009.  The race is the third of seven on the NHRA Northeast division schedule and will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, vying for points leading to divisional and national championships.  Racers will close out the season at Atco Raceway in October.

Selkirk, N.Y., racer John Finke has the lead in the Top Alcohol Dragster points.  Finke got a jump in the point standings by starting the season at an out-of-division event in Bradenton, Fla., where he got the win.  He made his second final-round appearance at the division's last race, at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., and came away with runner-up points.  The second place racer, Mike Kosky of Cuddy, Pa., is 85 points back.  Kosky was runner-up at an out-of-division race in Norwalk, Ohio, and went to the semis at Maple Grove Raceway.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car, perennial Top Alcohol Funny Car champ Frank Manzo is leading the points.  The Morganville, N.J., racer is nearly 100 points ahead of No. 2 racer, Terry Munroe of Beaver, Pa.  Manzo started the year with two consecutive wins, at Virginia Motorsports Park in Petersburg, Va., and at the race in Norwalk, where he squared off against Munroe in the final to earn his 100th divisional event win.  Manzo made a third final-round appearance in Maple Grove but came up short, earning runner-up points.  Munroe's best outing so far was the runner-up finish in Norwalk but he did go to the semis in an out-of-division race in Indianapolis.

The points battle in Super Gas has all the makings of a good old fashioned family rivalry.  Kingston, Ont., racers Al Kenny and his son Jason have been flip-flopping between first and second place.  Before the race in Maple Grove Al was leading the point standings and Jason was 25 points behind in second place.  However, coming out of Maple Grove, where Jason was runner-up and Al lost in the second round, Jason leads in the standings by 19 points.  They are also competing in the Super Comp class.  At this point, Al is in second place and Jason in No. 5 in the standings.

Gates at Atco Raceway open at 7 a.m. each day.  Qualifying and time trials start Friday at 9:30 a.m. and continue Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to noon.  Competitors in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will qualify twice on Friday, at 2 and 5 p.m., and run all three rounds of eliminations on Saturday, at 1, 3 and 5 p.m.  All other classes will run at least one round of eliminations on Saturday and then continue on Sunday at 9:30 a.m. until the winners are crowned.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Atco Raceway are $20 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  A three-day ticket is $55.  Children 6 to 11 years old are $1 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free.

Atco Raceway is located at 1000 Jackson Drive in Atco.  For more information call the track, (856) 768-2167, or visit www.AtcoRaceway.com.

NHRA Northeast division racers will continue the season July 3-5 in West Lebanon, N.Y.  Lebanon Valley Dragway will host the division's fourth race.
