Saturday

SPOKANE, Wash. (June 13, 2009) – Pairings are set for Sunday's eliminations at Spokane County Raceway.  With qualifying complete, Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Shawn Cowie of Delta, B.C., and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Ken Webster from Red Deer, Alb., grabbed the No.1 spots at the inaugural Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. Over 3,000 eager drag racing fanatics made their way to the renovated track to enjoy side by side racing at over 265 mph.

Cowie posted a 5.465-second, 265.22 mph pass in qualifying to place him just ahead of Joey Severance from Spanaway, Wash. Cowie is piecing together a dominating year by winning out-of-division races in Phoenix and Las Vegas to go along with his victory at Mission Raceway Park last month. Because of the odd number of cars in competition, he will have a bye run in the first round of eliminations Sunday.

Webster will be looking for his first win of the season going into Sunday, qualified at the top spot.  His run of 5.741 seconds at 252.05 mph catapulted him to the top of the field and in front of current divisional points leader Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore.

After two days of intense qualifying, there were no changes to these following No.1 spots from Friday's top competitors. Rob Harrison, N. Vancouver, B.C., remained at the top of the Comp Eliminator class alongside Super Stocker Byron Setters of Red Deer, Alb., and Bill Edgeworth of Tacoma, Wash., in Stock. Barry Daniluk of Red Deer, Alb., held the No.1 spot in the division's Auto Max USA Top Sportsman class with the Top Dragster category being led by Steve Cook of Rexburg, Idaho. The Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson pole stayed with Danny Lee Patridge from Kennewick, Wash.

Racing continues Sunday with gates opening at 8 a.m.  Eliminations will begin at 9 a.m.  Eliminations for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car begin at noon.  General Admission is $25 on Sunday, which includes a pit pass! For more information please call Spokane County Raceway at (509) 244-3333 or visit www.SpokaneCountyRaceway.com.

SPOKANE, Wash. – Spokane County Raceway will host its first ever NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 12-14, 2009.  The race, which is the third of seven in NHRA's Northwest division, will feature more than 400 cars in eight categories vying for points leading to divisional and national championships.  The event will feature 260 mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars.  The division's Auto Max USA Top Sportsman Series, Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.

Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Shawn Cowie is leading the points on the strength of three wins in as many races.  The Delta, B.C., racer opened the year at out-of-division races in Phoenix and Las Vegas and won both of those.  Then, at the division's first event for Top Alcohol competitors at Mission (B.C.) Raceway Park, he scored another win.  Cowie has a 159-point lead on second place competitor Dale Carlson of Olympia, Wash.  Carlson was runner-up to Cowie in Mission.  Carlson also ran in Phoenix but was ousted in the first round.

Reigning Top Alcohol Funny Car champ Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore., is currently leading in the standings.  Hough ran in Las Vegas and lost in the first round.  But he rebounded at his second race, in Mission, to take the win over John Evanchuk of Edmonton, Alb.  The race at Mission was Evanchuk's first of the season.

In Comp Eliminator, there are two points separating the first and second place racers.  Westminster, Colo., resident Clint Neff is leading the points after attending three races. His best showing was a runner-up finish at the division's season opener at Firebird Raceway in Boise, Idaho.  Patrick Byron, Hoquiam, Wash., is just off the pace but with four races under his belt, he has yet to advance past the second round.

There is also a tight race in Super Stock.  Casey Setters of Red Deer, Alb., has a two-point lead on Don Thomas of Spruce Grove, Alb.  The event in Mission was Setters' third, and best, event.  He made his first final-round appearance of the year and came away with runner-up points.  Thomas has been to five races this season and his best performance came at Firebird Raceway where he went to the fourth round.

Gates at Spokane County Raceway will open at 8 a.m. each day.  Qualifying and time trials kick off Friday at 9 a.m. and continue Saturday at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have three qualifying runs on Saturday, at 11 a.m., 1:30 and 4 p.m.  Eliminations begin Sunday morning at 9.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.
