BRAINERD, Minn. – The NHRA West Central division's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series will head to Brainerd Int'l Raceway (BIR) for Thunder at the Lake, May 22-24, 2009.  The race is the second of six in division competition and will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, vying for points leading to divisional and national championships.  The division's Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman Series, West Central Division Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.

Some racers have gotten a jump in the point standings by attending out-of-division events earlier this season.  Among them are Stock Eliminator racers Scott and Brad Burton of Golden, Colo.  The father-son duo is currently in first and second place, respectively, in the division's Stock Eliminator standings.  The pair went to Pacific division races in Chandler, Ariz., Tucson, Ariz., and Las Vegas.  Scott went to the final round in both Tucson and Las Vegas and scored the win in Vegas.  Brad made it to the fourth round at both those races.

Michael Miller of Santa Fe, N.M., is another early-bird racer.  He comes into BIR leading the points in both Super Comp and Super Gas.  Miller competed in Tucson and Las Vegas.  In Tucson he went to the fourth round in Super Comp and was runner-up in Super Gas.  In Las Vegas he went to round-five in Super Comp and round-four in Super Gas.  Starbuck, Minn., resident Trevor Larson is in second place in the Super Comp point standings after outings in Chandler and Tucson.  Larson went to the semis in Chandler.

Gates at BIR open at 8 a.m. Friday and Saturday and at 7 a.m. Sunday.  Qualifying and time trials start Friday morning at 9 and continue Saturday at 9 a.m.  Competitors in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have one qualifying session on Friday, at 4:30 p.m., and two on Saturday, at 1 and 4 p.m.  Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars will run first round at noon.

Tickets for Thunder at the Lake are $20 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children, 6 to 12 years old, are $10 each day.  Kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.  A "Superweek" ticket is also available.  For more information call the track, (866) 444-4455, or visit www.BrainerdRaceway.com.
