BOISE, Idaho (May 4, 2009) -- The 39th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor presented by Dan Wiebold Ford, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is in the books. Although most of the final rounds were delayed a day by rain, it was worth the wait for the racers who ended up in the winner's circle Monday, including Nampa's Scott Stephens who earned the Top Sportsman win. Stephens was joined in the winner's circle by Super Stock racer Steve Wann of Modesto, Calif., and Clarance Bidniack, a Stock Eliminator competitor from Edmonton, Alta.

Stephens had qualified his '98 Monte Carlo in the No. 11 spot and beat top qualifier Curt Geise of Auburn, Wash., in the semis. In the final he squared off against No. 10 qualifier Robert Matthews, Gig Harbor, Wash. Stephens made a 13.033-second, 64.96 mph pass when Matthews red-lighted in his '67 Nova.

Wann was the No. 2 Super Stock qualifier in his '69 Barracuda and in the final he took on Sandy, Ore., resident Bill Parmenter in a '57 Chevy. Wann ran 9.907 seconds at 133.31 mph to Parmenter's 12.409-second, 103.12 mph run in a double-breakout win. Bidniack ran his '70 Roadrunner against Tibor Kadar of Peoria, Ariz., in the final. In another double-breakout race, Bidniack ran 10.970 seconds at 119.96 mph to Kadar's 10.879-second, 119.87 mph effort in his '67 Camaro.

Super Comp racer Steve Apted, Medford, Ore., also made it to the winner's circle when he ousted Bart Hiatt of Fallon, Nev., in the final. Dave Kelly, Walla Walla, Wash., scored the win in Super Gas as he beat Ken Heard of Rindgefield, Wash. The win in Super Street went to Tom Manfred, Liberty Lake, Wash., who bested Steve Reynolds, another Nampa racer. BOISE, Idaho (May 3, 2009) – Comp Eliminator racer Jeff Lane  and Nostalgia Top Fuel pilot Mike McLennan made their way to the winner's circle at Firebird Raceway. Unfortunately, they were the only categories to be completed.  Despite the best efforts of NHRA and Firebird Raceway officials, the final rounds of the 39th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor presented by Dan Wiebold Ford, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, will be finished up on Monday.

Saturday

BOISE, Idaho (May 2, 2009) – Rain delayed the final rounds of qualifying at 39th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor presented by Dan Wiebold Ford, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, several hours but racing got underway at about 3 p.m. In the end, there were no changes in the top qualifiers from Friday's action and Oregon City, Ore., resident Adam Bowdish kept the No. 1 spot in Comp Eliminator and Eric Bell of Chandler, Ariz., stayed in the top spot in Super Stock and Poctello's Jon Percy is the No. 3 qualifier in Super Stock.

Hal Sorensen, Vancouver, Wash., leads the Stock Eliminator field and Curt Geise, Auburn Wash., heads up Top Sportsman. Rexburg, Idaho's Steve Cook is the best qualifier in Top Dragster and Jeff Havens, Yakima, Wash., leads the contingent in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson. Four local favorites are in the top 10 in the Sportsman Motorcycle field as well. Boise residents Rich Pedraza (No. 4), Jacob Wood (No. 9) and Jim Lambert (No. 10) along with Pocatello's Mike Butterfield (No. 8) will be among those vying for the win at Firebird Raceway.

Because the weather outlook for Sunday does not bode well, NHRA and track officials will run as many rounds of eliminations as possible Saturday night but racing will Sunday at Firebird Raceway. For the latest information call the track, (208) 938-8986, or visit www.FirebirdOnline.com.

Preview

BOISE, Idaho – Firebird Raceway will host the 39th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor presented by Dan Wiebold Ford, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, May 1-3, 2009.  The race is the first of six on the NHRA Northwest division schedule and will feature drivers in six racing categories vying for valuable points leading to divisional and national championships.  The division's Auto Max USA Top Sportsman Series, the Northwest Division Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.  The weekend extravaganza will also showcase AA/Nitro Fuel Dragsters, headed up by recent March Meet winner Brett Harris.

Some racers, including Nampa's Dick Vander Meer, have gotten a jump on the season by competing at out-of-division races.  Vander Meer ran at Pacific division events in Chandler, Ariz., and Las Vegas.  In Chandler the Super Comp racer went to the fourth round but suffered a first-round loss in Las Vegas.  Those numbers are good enough to give him a slight edge in the point standings so he comes into Firebird leading the Super Comp class.  However, there are four other racers within reach of the former division champion.  Earl Cunningham, Bonney Lake, Wash.; Jerry Denton Jr., Chandler, Ariz.; George Preszler, Kennewick, Wash.; and Bob Woodruff, Maple Valley, Wash., are all just 11 points back.

Two of the division's reigning champions were in the final round of this race a year ago.  Super Gas champion Mike Ferderer of Buckley, Wash., scored the win over Portland, Ore., racer Rodney Lee and Super Street champion Nikki Cannon, Bothell, Wash., was runner-up to Dudley Gee of Canby, Ore.

Gates at Firebird Raceway open at 8 a.m. each day.  Qualifying and time trials start Friday morning at 9 and continue Saturday at 9 a.m.  Racers in Comp Eliminator will qualify at 1 and 4 p.m. on Friday and at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturday.  Eliminations will start Sunday at 9 a.m.  AA/Nitro Fuel Dragsters will run throughout the weekend.

Tickets for the 39th Annual NAPA Auto Parts Ignitor presented by Dan Wiebold Ford are $15 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children 6 to 12 years old are $5 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free.

Firebird Raceway is located on Highway 16, five miles north of Highway 44.  For more information call the track, (208) 938-8986, or visit www.FirebirdOnline.com.

NHRA Northwest division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will continue the 2009 season north of the border.  Mission Raceway Park in Mission, B.C., will host the second race May 22-24.
