CECIL, Ga. (Sunday, April 5, 2009) – Miramar, Fla., resident Bill Evans collected the win in Top Alcohol Dragster at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at South Georgia Motorsports Park and Mark Billington of Norcross, Ga., won in Top Alcohol Funny Car.  The race was the fourth of six in NHRA's Southeast division.

In the Top Alcohol Dragster final, Evans squared off against No. 1 qualifier Artie Allen of Jacksonville, Fla. Allen red-lighted and Evans ran 5.782 seconds at 254.57 mph to earn his first win of the season.  He was runner-up at the division's season opener in Bradenton, Fla.

This was Billington's third final round appearance of the year and his first win.  Starting from the No. 6 qualifying spot this time he ended up in the final against top qualifier Mickey Ferro of Stamford, Conn.  Billing made a 6.401-second, 237.88 mph run but it was enough to beat Ferro whose car went up in smoke at the hit of the throttle.

The Comp Eliminator final was to have been a father vs. daughter affair when Sorrento, Fla., racer Glen Treadwell had a bye into the final and his daughter Jenny, of Mt. Plymouth, Fla., won the semis.  However, Jenny could not make the call, handing the win to her dad.  Glen Treadwell also has two runner-up finishes on the year.

Super Stock racer Mike Crutchfield, Montgomery, Ala., scored the win in his '08 G5, beating out Bo Butner, Georgetown, Ind., in the final.  The Stock Eliminator win went to Kinston, N.C., resident Mickey Ferro in his '69 Camaro when he beat No. 1 qualifier Bud Rowe, Bridgeton, N.C., in the final.  Sherman Adcock Jr., Fortson, Ga., grabbed the Super Comp win from Trevor Wiggins, Canton, Ga.; Steve Furr, Harrisburg, N.C., ousted Mike Corry, Lake Worth, Fla., for the win in Super Gas; and Greg McInerny, Titusville, Fla., won in Super Street, beating Mike De Sio, Seminole, Fla., in the final.  Top Sportsman racer Kurt Damron, Fruitland, Fla., earned the win when he beat Mike Thompson, Naples, Fla., and in Top Dragster, Steve Cohen, Trilby, Fla., jettisoned Ken Wells, Orlando, Fla., in the final to take the win.

NHRA Southeast Division racers head to Atlanta Dragway in Commerce, Ga., for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, September 11-13.  In the meantime, racers may also compete at out-of-division races.

Saturday

CECIL, Ga. (Saturday, April 4, 2009) – Qualifying is complete at the NHRA Southeast division's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at South Georgia Motorsports Park.  In Top Alcohol Dragster, Artie Allen of Jacksonville, Fla., the reigning division champion, jumped to the top of the field while Mickey Ferro, Stamford, Conn., leads in Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Allen, who won this race a year ago, blistered the quarter-mile with a 5.295-second run at 265.33 mph.  Marion, Ind., racer Robin Samsel made the next closest run at 5.377-seconds at 265.90 mph.  In Sunday's eliminations Allen will square off against No. 8 qualifier Cherissa Griffis of Jacksonville, Fla., in the first round. Griffis ran 6.382 seconds at 168.70 mph.

The Top Alcohol Funny Car race was a little closer. Ferro made a 5.600-second, 260.11 mph lap which was just enough to keep him ahead of No. 2 qualifier Mick Snyder of Demotte, Ind.  Snyder ran 5.612 seconds at 258.91 mph.  Because there are only seven cars competing in the eight-car field, Ferro will have a bye run in the first round.

In other qualifying categories, Glen Treadwell of Sorrento, Fla., sits atop the Cop Eliminator field, Bobby Dennis, Shorter, Ala., heads up Super Stock in his '91 Calais, and Bud Rowe, Bridgeton, Conn., is the best qualifier in Stock Eliminator behind the wheel of his '94 Camaro.  Top Sportsman racer Ronnie Davis, Suwanee, Ga., is in the No. 1 slot in his '63 Corvette and Don Marks leads the pack in Top Dragster.

Eliminations at South Georgia Motorsports Park start Sunday morning at 9.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at 1 p.m.
