Champions crowned at Yellowstone

ACTON, Mont. Richard Putz scored the Top Alcohol Dragster win at the 4th Annual Summer Championships, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, at Yellowstone Drag Strip while Paul Anderson grabbed the Top Alcohol Funny Car win.  Billings racers Derek Menholt and Gaby Collazo also made their way to the winner's circle.

Putz, the Earlville, Iowa, resident who qualified No. 1, made his best run of the weekend in the final, a 5.568-second pass at 239.02 mph, to beat No. 2 qualifier Cody Perkins of Bluffdale, Utah, in the final.  Perkins's final-round pass of 5.590 seconds at 254.90 mph was also his best run of the event but it was not enough to get around Putz.

Anderson, a resident of Erie, Colo., had qualified in fourth place and in the final he squared off against reigning division champion Brian Hough of Junction City, Ore.  Anderson's 5.917-second, 243.90 mph pass was enough to hold off Hough's 5.953-second effort at 244.07 mph.

The Top Sportsman final featured an all-Billings lineup.  Menholt, who had qualified No. 2, wheeled his '68 Camaro to the win over Jeff Scheller in his '92 Camaro.  Sportsman Motorcycle finalist Collazo rode an '02 Yamaha around the event's No. 1 qualifier Buff Kobs of Coeur D'lene, Idaho, on board his '95 Kawasaki

In Comp Eliminator, Deric Kramer, Sterling, Colo., took the win over top qualifier Dean Carter of Glendale, Ariz.  Henderson, Nev., racer Justin Lamb took his No. 1 qualifying effort in Super Stock to the winner's circle by beating Eagle, Idaho's Jackie Alley in the final.  In Stock Eliminator, it was Tommy Gaynor, Vancouver, Wash., who grabbed the trophy when he beat out Jeff Parker, Casper, Wyo., in the final.  Super Comp racer Andy Morris, Olympia, Wash., got the win over Daryl Baker, Dewinton, Alb., and in Super Gas, Evan, Colo., resident Jeff Taylor beat out Billy Maddox of Sidney, Neb.  Don Miller, Jordan, Utah, drove his Super Street entry to the win over Yakima, Wash., racer Jay Fulcher and in Top Dragster, Clint Menghini of Belt, Mont., won over Blu Hayball of Fort Hall, Idaho.

This was the last of six races in NHRA Northwest division competition but racers can still travel to out-of-division events to earn points toward national and divisional championships.  The final NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series of the season is scheduled October 19-21 in NHRA's Southeast division.

Event preview:

ACTON, Mont. Yellowstone Drag Strip will host the 4th Annual Summer Championships, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, August 17-19. The race is the last of six in NHRA Northwest division competition and will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars, vying for points leading to divisional and national championships. Racers may continue to earn points at out-of-division events. The division's Top Sportsman and Top Dragster classes, and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.

Top Alcohol Dragster rookie Thomas Bayer has a strong lead in the point standings after going to the final round at five out of six races. Although he is new to the Top Alcohol Dragster class, Bayer, a resident of Fontana, Calif., is no stranger to winning drag races.

He is the reigning Pacific division champion in both Super Comp and Super Gas and he is wheeling the dragster owned and tuned by Steve Federlin, the Northwest division's defending Top Alcohol Dragster champ. Former division champion Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash., is chasing Bayer in the points. Severance has a win and a runner-up finish along with a spate of semifinal rounds to his credit. He was runner-up to Bayer at the division's last event at Woodburn (Ore.) Dragstrip. Shawn Cowie is also looking to unseat Bayer. Cowie and Bayer have squared off in the final round twice this season and each has taken a win.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car competition, defending champion Brian Hough may be poised to win his third career championship. The Junction City, Ore., racer has made three final-round appearances in the five races he has attended and has scored one win. However, Hank Coolidge, Sunburst, Mont., and Clint Thompson, Klamath Falls, Ore., are just behind him. Coolidge won an out-of-division race in Brainerd, Minn., and was runner-up to Hough at Champion Raceway in Eagle Point, Ore. Thompson beat Hough in the final at Mission (B.C.) Raceway Park but also has three first-round losses.

Puyallup, Wash., racer Jody Lang is leading in both the Super Stock and Stock Eliminator points. And Jeff Lane, the division's reigning champion in both Comp Eliminator and Stock Eliminator, is again leading in the Comp points and is chasing Lang in Stock Eliminator. Both drivers are vying for their sixth career division title.
