Manzo joins Mercier in winner's circle

RISING SUN, Md. – Nine-time NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Funny Car National Champion Frank Manzo had to wait an extra 12 hours before knocking out Dan Pomponio for the win in the funny car final today at Cecil County Dragway With an afternoon rain delay and racing running late into the night on Saturday, the funny car final was postponed until Sunday morning, joining the rest of final eliminations originally scheduled for Sunday.

Manzo picked up where he left off on Saturday with a 5.836 second lap at 249.16 mph against Pomponio in the final round. Pomponio slowed to a 6.408 second 172.89 mph in the final after qualifying third with a 5.935 second run. Event preview:

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Points battles heat up with summer temperatures

RISING SUN, Md. – Cecil County Dragway will host the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northeast Shootout, where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships, August 25-27.  Drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, will take part in the three-day event.  The race is the fourth of six in Northeast division competition.  Pro Mod racers will also run in conjunction with the event.

Defending division Top Alcohol Dragster champion Arthur Gallant is working toward his third straight division title.  If he can hang on, it will be the Boxboro, Mass., racer's fourth career championship.  Currently, he has an 85-point lead over second-place racer John Finke of Selkirk, N.Y.  Gallant is also in contention for his second national championship, coming into Cecil County Dragway third in the national point standings.  The veteran racer started the season with a semifinal-round performance an out-of-division event in Gainesville, Fla., and has gone on to make four successive final-round appearances.  He was runner-up at another out-of-division event, in Bradenton, Fla.; was runner-up to Finke at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa.; took the win at Lebanon (N.Y.) Valley Dragway; and, at Virginia Motorsports Park in Richmond, Va., he scored runner-up points again.  Finke suffered first-round losses in both Gainesville and Bradenton before taking the win in Pennsylvania and advancing to the semis at both Lebanon Valley Dragway and Virginia Motorsports Park.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car competition, reigning divisional and national champ Bob Newberry could defend both titles but he will have to fend off longtime rival Frank Manzo who, with 15 division championships and nine national titles, has more year-end accolades than any other racer in the history of the series.  Manzo, a Morganville, N.J., resident, is 58 points behind Newberry, who hails from Schenectady, N.Y.  Newberry got an early jump in the points, attending out-of-division races in Gainesville, Bradenton and Cecil, Ga., and was runner-up at each event.  In Northeast division competition, he was runner-up to Manzo at Lebanon Valley Dragway and went to the semis at Maple Grove Raceway.  Manzo has only attended three races and was runner-up at Maple Grove Raceway and scored the win at Lebanon Valley Dragway before suffering a first-round loss at Virginia Motorsports Park.  In the national point standings, Newberry is No. 1 and Manzo is No. 3.

Comp Eliminator standout Sal Biondo, Maspeth, N.Y., has been to three races this year and has been to the final round at each of them, putting him in the lead in the division point standings.  He scored wins at Maple Grove Raceway and Virginia Motorsports Park.

In Super Gas, a single point separates points leader Tom Stalba of Williamstown, N.J., from No. 2 competitor Jason Kenny of Kingston, Ohio.  Each driver has a win with Kenny earning his in Cecil, Ga., and Stalba getting his at Lebanon Valley Dragway.  Stalba, who is married to Top Alcohol Dragster driver Karen Stalba, is the division's reigning Super Comp champion and has earned either the Super Comp or Super Gas title every year since 2000.

Gates at Cecil County Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day.  Qualifying and time trials are slated to begin at 9 a.m. Friday and continue from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have two qualifying runs on Friday, at 6 and 8 p.m.  Pro Mod will qualify at 6:30 and 8:45 p.m. Friday.  Eliminations will start at 2 p.m. Saturday.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run all three rounds of eliminations Saturday at 4, 6 and 8 p.m.  Pro Mod eliminations are slated for Saturday at 4:30, 6:30 and 8:45 p.m.  Eliminations will continue Sunday morning at 9:30.
