Aragona, Martel lead winners at Atco Lucas Oil Series event

ATCO, N.J.  Frank Aragona and Brian Martel led this weekend's winners at Atco Raceway for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.  Both drivers also lead the Northeast Division point's standings and are second in the NHRA Lucas Oil Nationals points chase.

Aragona grabbed his third win of the year out of Freehold, N.J., in defeating Joe Carnasciale, Cranston, R.I., in Comp Eliminator.  Aragona wheeled his dragster to a lap of 8.269 seconds at 136.08 mph as Carnsciale lost power and slowed to an 11.447 in the final round.

Martel used a .010 second package to claim his first divisional event win of the year to go along with a national event win back in June.  The second generation driver had a .007 second reaction time and ran 9.203 on a 9.20 dial to beat Marty Rinehart for the Super Stock title.

Another second generation driver took the honors in Super Gas as Mike Sawyer ousted Jake Barbato by about 18 inches at the finish line while Casey Grubb made it two in a row in Super Street on the double breakout with Chris De Pascale.  Grubb won the last divisional event at New England Dragway.

Wayne Horton returned to the Atco Raceway winner's circle in the MXI/Magnaflux Top Sportsman class presented by Select Performance posting a time of 7.753, 175.57 mph in his '71 Chevelle over Michael Kaufman in his '67 Corvette and Mike Sullivan won in the MXI/Magnaflux Top Dragster presented by Select Performance against Clinton Mills.  Horton won the 2010 Atco event as well.

Donald Pires and Herbert Roby rounded out the weekend winner's.  Pires leads the division points in Stock Eliminator taking his second win of the year defeating Donnie Carroll in his '70 Nova.  Roby, running a '23 roadster, knocked out Marty Jones in Super Comp.

Northeast Division racers head to Cecil County Dragway in two weeks for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Aug. 17-19.

ATCO, N.J. The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event will be held at Atco Raceway August 3-5. The event is one of seven in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northeast division and one of 43 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The division's MXI/Magnaflux Top Sportsman and Top Dragster Series' presented by Select Performance will also run in conjunction with the event.

Gates at Atco open at 7 a.m. everyday.  Qualifying and time trials begin Friday and Saturday at 9:30 a.m.  Comp Eliminator will run qualifying on Friday, at 1 and 4 p.m. and eliminations on Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. Top Dragster and Top Sportsman will have two qualifying sessions, at 3 and 4:30 p.m. Friday and one run on Saturday at 11 a.m. Top Dragster and Top Sportsman will run round 1 of eliminations at 3:30 p.m. Eliminations will continue Sunday at 9:30 a.m. with Top Dragster and Top Sportsman round 2 at 10:30 a.m.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Atco Raceway are $20 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Children 6 to 11 years old are $1 each day and Children 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND
: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2012 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions.  Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of  $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance.  The 2012 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster.  The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2012 Jegs Allstars.  Points are based on in-division races only. 

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions.  Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece.  Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants.  Any 2012 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.
