Sunday

RISING SUN, Md. (August 30, 2009) –  The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Cecil County Dragway is in the books with Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Duane Shields of Boulder City, Nev., and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Frank Manzo, Morganville, N.J., taking home the goods. This event completes the fifth of seven in Northeast division competition.

Shields
worked his way from the No.6 qualifying spot all the way to the Top Alcohol Dragster final to pick up the win. Dan Mercier of Montreal, Quebec, the No.1 qualifier, had him off the line but Shields was able to reel him in by posting a 5.423 second, 272.12 mph pass to secure the win light.

Top Alcohol Funny Car was mastered once again by Manzo, picking up back to back wins and his third in Northeast division competition. He grabbed his 102nd divisional win of his career when Scott McNiece of Brick, N.J., fouled at the starting line.  This marks Manzo's 13th divisional victory at Cecil County Dragway.

Dan Fletcher, Churchville, N.Y., continued his winning streak by winning the Comp Eliminator title.  This marks back to back Northeast divisional victories to go along with his national event win at Maple Grove last weekend.

Northeast division racers head to Old Bridge Township Raceway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, held Sept. 11-13.

Saturday

RISING SUN, Md. (August 29, 2009) – It was another battle with the rain at Cecil County Dragway, but NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series qualifying was able to get underway. Top Alcohol Funny Car ace Frank Manzo of Morganville, N.J., once again picked up the No.1 qualifying position. Due to time constraints, Top Alcohol Dragster will not finish qualifying until early tomorrow morning.

Manzo has grabbed all four Northeast division No.1 qualifiers to go along with his two victories.  His lap of 5.763 seconds at 250.97 mph was just enough to keep him ahead of No.2 qualifier, Frank Schuster out of Chesterfield N.J.

After one round of qualifying in Top Alcohol Dragster, Darren Nicholson, Mission Viejo, Calif., sits at the top of the class. He currently holds the No.3 spot in the overall standings, coming off a huge win in the last divisional held at Lebanon Valley Dragway.

Other top qualifiers at Cecil County Dragway included Dave Yediny, Nazareth, Pa., in Comp Eliminator; Gary Ewing of Bel Air, Md., in Super Stock; and Gene Monahan from Brockton, Mass., in Stock Eliminator.

Friday

The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series makes its way to Cecil County Dragway for its fifth of seven events in Northeast division competition.  The scheduled three-day event is currently on hold due to continuous rain, which has forced face officials to call it a day.  Racing will begin Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m.

RISING SUN, Md. – Cecil County Dragway will host the NHRA Northeast division's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, August 28-30, 2009.  The race is the fifth of seven slated for the region and will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars, vying for points leading to divisional and national championships. 

In the latter category is the Top Alcohol Funny Car class.  Morganville, N.J., racer Frank Manzo, the winningest sportsman driver in NHRA history, is nearly 200 points ahead of his closest rival, Terry Munroe of Beaver, Pa.  Manzo has been to four divisional races and has reached the final at all of them.  He won at the division's race at Virginia Motorsports Park in Richmond and at the last race, at Lebanon Valley Dragway in West Lebanon, N.Y., and was runner-up at Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa.  Manzo also scored the win over Munroe at an out-of-division race in Norwalk, Ohio.  Munroe's runner-up finish in Norwalk has been his best showing to date but he also went to the semis at an out-of-division race in Indianapolis.

In Top Alcohol Dragster, Selkirk, N.Y., resident John Finke is leading the charge with two final-round appearances and two semifinal-round showings.  He earned the win at an out-of-division race in Bradenton, Fla., and was runner-up at the division's event at Maple Grove Raceway.  In Richmond and at Lebanon Valley Dragway he went to the semis.  Mike Kosky, Cuddy, Pa., is just off the pace.  His lone final-round showing came in Norwalk, Ohio,  while he went to the semis at Maple Grove Raceway.

Gates at Cecil County Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day.  Qualifying and time trials will start Friday at 9:30 a.m. and continue Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.  Each class will run first round of eliminations on Saturday starting at 2 p.m.  Racers in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have two qualifying session on Friday, at 5 and 7 p.m., and run all three rounds of eliminations on Saturday, starting at 3 p.m.  Eliminations for all other classes will continue on Sunday at 9:30 a.m.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Cecil County Dragway are $18 each day.  Children 11 and under are admitted free.

BONUS PROGRAMS:  NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2009 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions.  Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance.  The 2010 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster.  The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2010 Jegs Allstars.  Points are based on in-division races only. 

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions.  Winners in Top Sportsman and Top Dragster will each earn $5,000.  Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece.  Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants.  Any 2010 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.
