Racing complete, champions crowned in Sonoma

Champions were recognized yesterday for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Pacific Division Drag Race presented by Korbel as fans at Sonoma Raceway were treated to Comp, Super Stock, Super Gas, Top Fuel Harley and the rest of the classes that encompass the nationwide series.

Multiple Californian drivers were crowned gold, including but not limited to Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, and Super Street.

In an all Californian Comp finale, Scott McClay, Tehachapi, Calif., handily defeated Doug Lambeck of Irvine, Calif. McClay hit 7.267 seconds, 175.96 mph cruising past Lambeck, 8.420 seconds, 149.12 mph. In Super Stock, Jim Rau, Sacramento, Calif., ran 10.584, 116.22 to attain a seamless victory as Eric Bell, Chandler, Ariz., fouled at the starting line.

In the Stock Eliminator final, Kyle Rizzoli of San Luis Obispo, Calif., blew past John Irving of Boulder City, Nev. Rizzoli ran 10.351, 126.67 defeating Irving, 12.417, 104.04. 

The Super Street final round showcased another all Californian affair; Scott Brown, San Ramon, Calif., eked out a close victory over Mark Simonian of Sanger, Calif. Brown ran 10.887, 132.63  narrowly defeating Simonian, 10.879, 138.74.

The other drivers visiting the winner's circle were Ryan Diosdado, in Super Comp; Gene Brown, Arvada, Colo., in Super Gas; Chris Newman, Lancaster, Calif., in Top Sportsman; and Thomas Bayer, Fontana, Calif., in Top Dragster.

The NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series was also in action headlined by the Top Fuel and Pro Fuel Harley classes, in which both titles went back to North Carolina. In the Top Fuel Harley finale, Jay Turner, of Julian, N.C., ran 6.290, 219.36 to defeat Kevin Boyer of Edmonton, Alb., in a hard fought battle. Boyer ran 6.526, 215.62 to make a competitive race.

Janette Thornley, Statesville, N.C., earned gold in Pro Fuel Harley beating out Dennis Fisher of Dayton, Ohio. Thornley ran 7.219, 178.05  defeating  Fisher's 7.422, 168.53.

Other winners in the Harley-Davidson Series were Tom Medlin, La Mirada, Calif., in Sportsman Motorcycle; Kevin Benson, Concord, Calif., in Draggin Bagger Harley; Augustine Herrera, Montebello, Calif., in Street Pro Harley; Augustine Herrera, Montebollo, Calif., in Hot Street Harley; John Cabral, Tracy, Calif., in Screamin' Eagle Performance Harley.

Drew Austin, Tacoma, Wash., won the A/Fuel Shootout; and Jeremy Hanger, Yorba Linda, Calif., took the honors in West Coast Outlaw Pro Mods.

SONOMA, Calif. – Fields were set today for all classes in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Sonoma Raceway and the Division 7 Drag Race presented by Korbel Champagne as racers will go into final eliminations on Sunday morning.

Gates open on Sunday at 8 a.m. with racing set to begin at 8:30 a.m. and will continuing throughout the day, culminating with the winner's circle celebration.

SONOMA, Calif. – NHRA Pacific division racers are back in action as they kicked off their NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 7 event presented by Korbel Champagne at Sonoma Raceway for the first of back to back NHRA weekends at the facility.  The NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series highlighted by the Top Fuel Harley class will also run this weekend as well at the West Coast Extreme Pro Mod and the Nostalgia A/Fuel John Shoemaker Memorial Shootout.

Today's action included two rounds of qualifying for racers in Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman along with a single pass for the Harley-Davidson Top Fuel and Pro Fuel classes.  Top Dragster, Comp and Top Sportsman will get a final qualifying pass on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. while the Harley classes will get a pair of runs at noon and 3:30 p.m.  Final qualifying and time trials for the remaining classes will also take place on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. with round 1 of eliminations for some classes set for Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m.

SONOMA, Calif. - Sonoma Raceway will host the NHRA Division 7 Drag Race presented by Korbel on July 22-24. The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division's Pacific Division Top Sportsman Series, Top Dragster Series and the NHRA Harley-Davidson Drag Racing Series will also run in conjunction with the event.

Qualifying and time trials start Friday morning at 8:30 a.m. and continue Saturday at 8:30a.m. Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman qualify on Friday at 11a.m. and 2:30 p.m. and Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Top Fuel and Pro Fuel Harley-Davidson classes qualify at 3 p.m. on Friday and noon and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday. Eliminations begin on Saturday at 2 p.m. and continue on Sunday at 8:30 a.m.

Tickets for Sonoma Raceway are $5 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND
: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2016 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $124,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2017 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2017 Jegs Allstars to be held at the 2017 K&N Filters NHRA Route 66 Nationals. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division and regional teams will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2017 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

NHRA HARLEY-DAVIDSON DRAG RACING SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, classes include Top Fuel, Pro Fuel, Pro Gas, Draggin' Bagger, Street Pro, Hot Street, and Screamin'Eagle Harley. The series posts an event purse of nearly $20,000 with a total series purse of more than $200,000.
