Severance wins again, Ruckman bags second at Woodburn Dragstrip

WOODBURN, Ore. Joey Severance picked up his sixth win of the year and Terry Ruckman bagged his second at this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Les Schwab Tires Challenge at Woodburn Dragstrip.

Severance, Woodburn, Ore., was coming off a big win at the K&N Filters NHRA Route 66 Nationals outside Chicago and continued his dominance qualifying number one in Top Alcohol Dragster with an event best 5.226 second pass.  He then worked his way through the field taking out fellow Oregon racer Garrett Bateman (Albany, Ore.) with a 5.270, 274.47 mph in the final to take home the win and the trophy.  Bateman qualified in the No. 2 position and was right on Severance's heels with a 5.340, 274.64.  Severance ran low elapsed time in each round including his round one win over brother-in-law Jay Livingston, Wilsonville, Ore.

Ruckman won on a hole shot over Annie Whiteley in the Top Alcohol Funny Car class as both racers hail from Grand Junction, Colo.  Ruckman's 5.555, 266.82 beat the quicker 5.530, 265.72 of Whiteley.  Ruckman left first by .026 seconds that proved to be the difference.  The win was Ruckman's second of the year to go along with his national event win in Las Vegas.

A pair of West Coast hitters scored for the first time in 2017 as Jody Lang won in Stock Eliminator and Thomas Bayer took home the Rig Rental Top Dragster crown.  Lang, Puyallup, Wash., had a perfect .000 second reaction time in his win over Dave Jung with his '81 Malibu and Bayer, Fontana, Calif., defeated Kurt Gross, Oregon City, Ore., with a .034 package.  Bayer went 7.309, 184.99 to Gross' 7.663, 171.39.

Home state racers won in Comp Eliminator and in Super Street as Brian Hyerstay beat Ralph Van Paepeghem in Comp and Gary Culp ended Josh Dalrymple's day in Super Street.  Hyerstay, Eugene, Ore., drove his dragster to a 9.138 second, 141.02 mph lap.  Culp, Herminston, Ore., and Dalrymple, Sunnyside, Wash., were close at the start and the finish with Culp a tick better at both ends with a .019 light and a 10.903 on the 10.90 index.

Other racers celebrating in the winner's circle were Sean Cour, Brush Prairie, Wash., in Super Stock; Chuck Babcock, Yorba Linda., Calif., in Super Comp; Ron MacKenzie, New Westminster, B.C., in Super Gas; and Kirk Lanz, Mission, B.C., in Top Sportsman. 

In the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson it was Dan Patridge, Kennewick, Wash., knocking out Gladstone, Ore., rider Don De Peel, 8.287, 157.15 to a 8.426, 154.13.

Also running in conjunction with the event was the NHRA Summit Racing Series and the NHRA Summit Jr. Drag Racing League.  Winning in Super Pro was Dave Jackson over Larry Miner; Rick Sales took out Michael McFadden in Pro and Cody Steen beat Haylie Crawford in Jr. Dragster.

Northwest Division racers head north to Pacific Raceways for the Protect the Harvest NHRA Northwest Nationals, Aug. 5-7 then return to Pacific Raceways for their next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Aug. 19-21.

WOODBURN, Ore. Racers made final qualifying runs today as the fields were set for the Les Schwab Tires Challenge NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Woodburn Dragstrip. 

Racers in 10 classes of competition took to the track that included Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars, Comp Eliminator, Stock and Super Stock.  Gates open at 8 a.m. on Sunday with racing scheduled to start at 9 a.m.

WOODBURN, Ore. NHRA Northwest division racers touched down on Woodburn Dragstrip for the Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Les Schwab Tires Challenge event.  The event is the fourth of six events that run through September where competitors will earn points toward both regional and divisional championships.

Racers in 10 different classes along with the NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson made qualifying and time trial runs today with final qualifying set for Saturday and eliminations on Sunday. The Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars made a pair of test runs today and will make qualifying runs tomorrow at noon, 2 and 4 p.m.  Other classes competing include; Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division's Top Sportsman Series and Rig Rentals Top Dragster Series will also run in conjunction with the event.

Gates open Saturday at 8 a.m. with time trials and qualifying continuing at 9 a.m.  Tickets are $25 on Saturday and Sunday for adults, kids age 6-14 are $5 and children younger than age 5 are admitted free with a paid adult.  For more information please call the track, (503) 982-4461, or visit www.WoodburnDragstrip.com.

The event is one of 45 scheduled across the country where drivers in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series earn points leading to divisional, regional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. Gates at Woodburn Dragstrip open at 8 a.m. every day. Qualifying and time trials start Friday at 9 a.m. and continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run test sessions on Friday at noon and 4 p.m. Qualifying for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car is Saturday, at noon, 2 and 4 p.m. Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m.

Tickets for the Woodburn Dragstrip are $15 Friday, $25 Saturday and $25 Sunday. Children ages 6 to 14 are $5 each day. Children 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2016 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $124,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2017 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2017 Jegs Allstars to be held at the 2017 K&N Filters NHRA Route 66 Nationals. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division and regional teams will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2017 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY-DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley-Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional

championships. The $14,000 champions' purse posted by Harley-Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.

TOP SPORTSMAN SERIES: The Northwest Division RH Racecars Top Sportsman Series, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in the Top Sportsman class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $3,500 champions' purse will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers.

RIG RENTALS TOP DRAGSTER SERIES: The Northwest Division Top Dragster Series, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in the Northwest division's Top Dragster class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $3,500 champions' purse will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers.
