Saturday

BENSON, N.C. – The home state of North Carolina dominated the winner's circle for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at GALOT Motorsports Park this past weekend including Steve Furr who advanced to the final round in both Super Gas and Top Dragster looking for the event double up. This is the first time in several years, and the only time this year, that the Lucas Oil racers will compete on an eighth-mile track instead of a quarter-mile.

In Furr's first final, the Harrisburg, N.C., racer met up with Corey Manuel in Super Gas and recorded a .005 second reaction time which proved to be the difference. Manuel, Winston-Salem, S.C., went 6.307 on the 6.30 index but could not catch Furr who recorded his 16th divisional win with a 6.326 second, 127.21 mph lap.

Furr then faced off with Robert Houston, Newland, N.C., in the Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragster class but left early with a red light foul start to end the double up hopes. Houston ran 4.702 seconds at 129.89 mph in his '12 dragster for his second career win.

Kevin Riner and Jeff Longhany each won for the home state as did Danny Waters in Super Comp. Riner, Autryville, N.C., picked up his first Lucas Oil divisional win posting a 6.754 second run in Super Stock with his '98 Camaro as Ronnie Courtney broke out in his '05 Cavalier. Longhany, Wade, N.C., was out first in Stock Eliminator and held on to defeat Cody Phillips, Lumberton, N.C. The win was Longhany's second. Waters, La Grande, N.C., used a .002 second reaction time to get a big holeshot and force AJ Currie, Godwin, N.C., to run too fast and breakout. Waters went 5.727, 137.82 in his '16 dragster for the win.

The Comp Eliminator trophy went to Jenny Treadwell, Mount Plymouth, Fla., grabbing her second win of the year out running Van Puckett who was also looking for his second win of the year. Treadwell went 5.264 seconds at 128.40 mph to Puckett's 5.300, 129.02. Treadwell won in Charlotte back in April and Puckett won in Atlanta in early April.

Also visiting the winner's circle was Robbie Welch, Mechanicsville, Md., in Super Street; Shawn Morrow, Piedmont, S.C., in the Davis Golf Cart Top Sportsman; Kaylee Creech, Clayton, N.C., in the Jr. 13-18 year olds; and Riley Hoover, Kinston, N.C., in the Jr. 6-9.
