Sunday

BAYTOWN, Texas – The NHRA South Central Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Tommy Costales Memorial Texas Sportsman Challenge wrapped up at Royal Purple Raceway with a winner's circle celebration crowning champions in nine categories. Each winner pocketed a share of the event purse and contingency postings along with bragging rights and the champion's NHRA Wally trophy.

The event was the third in the South Central Division as racers head to No Problem Raceway Park in Louisiana for their next Lucas Oil Series event, July 17-19.

Baytown racer Travis Salter led the list of Texan winners by going the distance in Super Gas. He paired up against Joseph Lokhaug, Burleson, Texas, in the final, who went red, handing the Wally to Salter. It was a battle of Cavaliers in the Super Stock final as Harvey Emmons III, Friendswood, Texas, added to his win at Texas Motorplex back in April. Emmons cut a great .003 light off the tree and recorded a 9.432 second, 126.85 mph pass to defeat Slate Cummings, Hammond, La., 8.787, 150.50.

The reigning Stock Eliminator national champion Austin Williams, Burleson, Texas, once again put his '72 Duster back into the winner's circle when Brett Candies, Thibodaux, La., went red in the Stock final. This marks Williams' second victory of the year to go along with his NHRA Kansas Nationals win in May. Christian Patton of Highlands, Texas, picked up a holeshot victory thanks to his .003 reaction time over David Dale, Oyster Creek, Texas, in the Super Comp final. Patton clocked in at 8.926 seconds, 175.78 mph to grab the win over Dale's quicker 8.914 second, 175.96 mph pass.

Joey Tanksley, Greenwell Springs, La., the event's No.1 qualifier, came up just short in the Comp Eliminator final when he went red against Craig Bourgeois of Metairie, La. Bourgeois, racing out of the No. 2 position, laid down a 7.663 second, 124.63 mph pass to take the easy win as the sole non-Texan to reach the winner's circle. It was a battle of Rays in the double breakout Super Street final with Ray Dew, League City, Texas, coming out on top in his '70 Nova. Dew ran 10.883 seconds at 138.91 mph to defeat Ray Todd, Friendswood, Texas, 10.881, 134.39.

Jenifer White, Conroe, Texas, got off the line with a .009 reaction time and a huge starting line advantage but took too much stripe handing the win over to William Swann, Carrolton, Texas. Swann laid down a 6.299 second, 221.92 mph pass to defeat White's runner up 6.251 second, 214.01 mph effort. Top Sportsman's No.1 qualifier Allen Firestone of Velma, Okla., handed the win over in the final as he went red against Jim Thorp, Mertzon, Texas. Thorp powered his '14 GXP to a winning 7.165 second, 192.06 mph lap.

Rounding out the list of winners was Robert Sanders of Katy, Texas, grabbing the Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson title. Sanders rode his '82 Suzuki to a  9.546 second, 137.51 mph lap to defeat Derek Dorey, Kingwood, Texas.
