Saturday

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – In the final results from Rockingham Dragway and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Arnie Martel joined local racer Lauren Freer to lead all winners on Saturday night.

 

Martel, Tewksbury, Mass., met up with Glen Treadwell, Sorrento, Fla., in the Comp Eliminator final, with Martel taking home the trophy with a pass of 7.722 seconds at 163.87 mph in his '15 Camaro to Treadwell's 7.732, 150.48 in his '01 dragster.

 

Mooresville, N.C., racer Freer knocked out Charles Yannetti, Alpine, N.J., in Super Gas driving a '63 Corvette to a lap of 9.887, 170.06. Yannetti left a tick too early with a 0.001-second red-light foul start in his '27 Ford roadster.

 

In the division's Davis Golf Cart Top Sportsman class, it was Jeffrey Barker ending Bobby Irby's day, and Larry Roberts did the same to Wendall Bowie in the Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragster class. Barker, Kathleen, Ga., clocked in at 6.634, 197.33 with his '06 Cobalt to edge out Irby at 7.226, 190.40. Roberts, Laurens, S.C., went 194.80 mph in 6.673 seconds after Bowie, Statesville, N.C., fouled at the start.

 

A handful of home-state racers joined in on the winner's circle celebration as Brandon Peterson, Randleman, N.C., and Joel Warren, Clinton, N.C., won in Super Stock and Stock, respectively. Peterson went 10.420, 124.26 mph to run down Emily Volkman, Coraopolis, Pa., with a 10.650, 121.28. Warren held off Jeff Strickland, Red Bay, Ala., in his '98 Firebird, running 10.449, 118.07 to Strickland's 10.289, 127.94.

 

Dennis Hill, Kevin Brannon, and Brendan George rounded out Saturday's Lucas Oil winners. Hill, Fayetteville, N.C., grabbed the win over Troy Williams in Super Street, running 10.915, 134.20 in his '68 Nova; Brannon, Boiling Springs, S.C., defeated former NHRA national champion Sherman Adcock, Fortson, Ga., in Super Comp, and George, Gainesville, Fla., took out Jack Aspinwall, Brunswick, Ga., in the 11.00 Index class.

 

In the Super Shootout specialty races Brannon advanced to the final round in both Super Comp and Super Gas but fell to Tony Morris, Winter Garden, Fla., in Super Comp and Iggy Boicesco, Warminster, Pa., in Super Gas. John Rollins, High Springs, Fla., won over Stan Coleman in Super Street with his '72 Nova.

 

NHRA Southeast Division racers head to Montgomery Motorsports Park for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 5-7.

Friday

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. – Brandon Peterson of Randleman, N.C., prevented an outsider sweep of Friday's Sportsman Shootout by driving his 1995 Camaro to victory in the combined Super Stock-Stock category on the first day of NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series action at Rockingham Dragway.

 

Peterson shared the Friday podium with Tony Morris of Winter Garden, Fla., winner in Super Comp; veteran Iggy Boicesco of Warminster, Pa., who drove his 2002 Corvette to victory in Super Gas; and John Rollins of High Springs, Fla., who won Super Street in his 1972 Chevy Nova.

 

It was all Barkers, all the time as Lindsey Barker set the qualifying pace in Top Dragster and Jeffrey Barker led the way in Top Sportsman.

 

The event, the fourth of seven in the division where drivers will earn points leading to national, regional and divisional championships, officially got under way today with qualifying and time trials in all classes. Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street and Stock drivers made their first runs today, as did the division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman and the Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragster racers.

 

Gates open at 8 a.m. on Saturday with final qualifying and time trials beginning at 9 a.m.  Early rounds of eliminations in Super Stock and Stock will begin at 5 p.m., and the division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman and the Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragster will have Round 1 of eliminations beginning at 6:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 Saturday while kids 12 and under get in free with a paid adult.  For more information, call 910-582-3400 or visit www.rockinghamdragway.com.

ROCKINGHAM, N.C. - Rockingham Dragway to host the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Southeast Division on May 29-31. The event is one of 45 events scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman Series and Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster Series will also be run in conjunction with the event.  

Gates at Rockingham Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start Friday at 9 a.m. and continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman qualify Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Saturday at 1 and 4 p.m. Eliminations for Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman start Saturday 6:30 p.m. Eliminations continue on Sunday at 9 a.m.

Tickets for Rockingham Dragway are $50 Friday, $40 Saturday and $20 Sunday. Children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND
: a $519,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2015 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions. Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $124,000 point fund from JEGS High Performance. The 2015 JEGS Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2015 JEGS Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division and regional teams will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, JEGS High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to JEGS Allstars participants. Any 2015 JEGS Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman Series: Run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships and a share in the year-end purse.

MOSER SPORTSMAN SHOOTOUT: Drivers who compete in seven NHRA sportsman classes will be eligible to participate in a new sportsman shootout program sponsored by Moser Engineering. Moser Engineering Sportsman Shootout qualifying points will be earned by competitors in Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman at each Southeast Division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. The Moser Sportsman Shootout will be held at the 2015 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Silver Dollar Raceway with a posted purse of $15,000, with the winner taking home up to $5,000.
