ORLANDO – Nine racers took home wins and the NHRA Wally trophy this weekend at the NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season opener at Orlando Speed World Dragway.

Orlando resident Wells led the way defeating Anthony Bertozzi, Ashland, Va., in the Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster class. The pair left the line together with Wells clocking in at 6.886 seconds at 193.43 mph with Bertozzi running a tic too quick at 7.101, 183.72 on his 7.12 index.

Randy Daniels and Donny Urban won in Comp Eliminator and Davis Gold Carts Top Sportsman respectively as both drivers took the early lead off the start and held on to take home the hardware. Daniels, Grantsboro, N.C., ran his '02 Grand Am to a lap of 8.614, 154.53 in downing Jenny Treadwell, Mount Plymouth, Fla., who ran quicker at 8.265, 158.07 in her dragster. Urban, Pittsboro, N.C., parlayed his early lead into the win against Ken Ellison, Moore, S.C., running 7.041 seconds at 188.60 mph in his '06 Cobalt to Ellison's 7.232, 188.49 in his '12 Camaro.

In Super Stock it was Lee Norton, Grover, N.C., and his '74 Duster topping Robbie Shaw's '99 Firebird while Jeff Longhany won over Lee Tuttle in Stock. Norton went 10.498 on his 10.49 dial combined with a .014 second reaction time to Shaw's 9.819, out of Bowdon, Ga. Longhany, out of Wade, N.C., had Tuttle, Albany, Ga., covered at the start by more than seven-hundredths of a second to win in 10.139, 129.21.

In the two closest finals of the day, Kevin Brannen and Darrin Kling took the wins in Super Comp and Super Gas. Brannen, Boiling Springs, S.C., knocked out Sherman Adcock, Fortson, Ga., by about 22 inches with an 8.929, 180.12 to a 8.928, 177.04. Weirsdale, Fla., resident Kling, drove his '63 Corvette to a hole shot win over John Taylor, Naples, Fla. Kling went 9.898, 163.41 to Taylor's 9.897, 167.26 to win by about 24 inches.

Super Street runner John Rollins, High Springs, Fla., powered his '72 Nova to a win over Gaines Hickman with a .009 second package. Rollins was off the line in .004 seconds, then went 10.905 on the 10.90 index to upend Hickman, Barnesville, Ga., and his '65 Malibu running 10.877, 144.75.

Rounding out the list of winners was Mike Clifford of Daytona Beach, Fla., and his '66 Barracuda covering the quarter-mile in 10.971, 117.77 to beat Mark Whitener, Winter Garden, Fla., 10.900, 125.04 on the double breakout for the title in the 11.00 Index class.

ORLANDO, Fla. – Day two is in the books and the fields are set for the division's Davis Golf Cart Top Sportsman, Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragsters and Comp Eliminator at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Orlando Speed World Dragway. First round of eliminations were also held this evening in Stock, Super Stock and the remaining classes in competition.

ORLANDO, Fla. - The NHRA Southeast Division is at Orlando Speed World Dragway for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Speed World Winter Meltdown event. This weekend will be featuring 200 mph Top Dragster and Top Sportsman cars along with the rest of the classes that make up the nationwide series.

This weekend's event is one of seven in the division and one of 44 that take place throughout the year from coast to coast with nearly 400 of the best racers from the region looking for valuable points leading toward national and divisional championships. 

Racers made qualifying and time trial runs today that also included the division's Davis Golf Cart Top Sportsman and Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragsters which made one qualifying run and will continue qualifying and time trial runs on Saturday.

Orlando Speed World Dragway will host the NHRA Southeast Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Feb. 13-15. The event is the first of seven in the division and will feature drivers in six categories, including Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator, vying for points leading to divisional and national championships. The division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman Series and Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster Series will also be run in conjunction with the event.

Gates at Orlando Speed World Dragway open at 9 a.m. Friday, 8 a.m. Saturday and 8:30 a.m. Sunday. Qualifying and time trials start Friday morning at 11 a.m. and continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Racers in Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman will have one qualifying run on Friday, beginning at 3:30 p.m., and two on Saturday, starting at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Eliminations start Saturday afternoon and will continue on Sunday at 9 a.m.

Regional awards include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $124,000 point fund from JEGS High Performance. The 2014 JEGS Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2014 JEGS Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division and regional teams will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, JEGS High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to JEGS Allstars participants. Any 2014 JEGS Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

MOSER SPORTSMAN SHOOTOUT: Drivers who compete in seven NHRA sportsman classes will be eligible to participate in a new sportsman shootout program sponsored by Moser Engineering. Moser Engineering Sportsman Shootout qualifying points will be earned by competitors in Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, Super Street, Top Dragster and Top Sportsman at each Southeast Division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event. The Moser Sportsman Shootout will be held at the 2014 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Silver Dollar Raceway with a posted purse of $15,000, with the winner taking home up to $5,000.
