Sunday

GAINESVILLE, Fla. In the final results from Auto-Plus Raceway at Gainesville and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Duane Shields, Boulder City, Nev., and Mathew Gill, West Bridgewater, Mass., took home the wins in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, respectively.

Shields, worked his way through the field and ran 5.484 seconds at 266.64 mph in his final-round victory over John Finke, Selkirk, N.Y., who clocked in at 5.636 seconds, 254.86 mph. Shields had the starting line advantage over Finke and never trailed and took his dragster down the track for the win. This is Shields' second divisional win this season and 24th career win. His other win was the Royal Purple Raceway Divisional which was postponed due to the weather and was completed at the Amalie Oil NHRA Gatornationals here in Gainesville earlier this year. Not only did Shields and his team double-up at the Gatornationals and win the National event as well, but with this past weekend's divisional win, this would be Shields third win this season in Gainesville. Shields had also attended the Auto-Plus NHRA Nationals in Reading, Pa., last weekend where he made it to the final but did not receive the win. Shields and the team made up for it this weekend with another final round appearance where they received the Wally.

Mathew Gill faced off against Dan Pomponio, Berlin, N.J., and posted a winning run of 5.717 seconds, 256.36 mph in his 08' Mustang. Pomponio drove to a 7.487 second, 137.65 mph lap for his runner up finish. Pomponio had the starting line advantage but lost traction off the line and Gill was able to drive by him and take the win. This was Gill's first divisional win in three final round appearances. Gill now trials Mickey Ferro but just one point in the chase for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Top Alcohol Funny Car East Region Championship. He has one more race that he can claim points for and the only regional race that is left for the season is at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. We will see in a few weeks if it will either be Ferro or Gill claiming this title.

In the East Region there was a championship decided this weekend in Top Alcohol Dragster. Jackie Fricke, Flemington, N.J., was crowned the NHRA Lucas Oil Series East Region Top Alcohol Dragster Champion. Including Fricke there were three racers that were in contention for the championship, Rich McPhillips, Phoenixville, Pa., and Jeff Veale, Stoney Creek, Ont., CAN were the other two. For Veale, it came down to the semi-final round when Veale was taken out by Duane Shields that ended his chances for the championship. McPhillips had lost in the first round of eliminations which ended his championship hopes. Fricke had two divisional wins and one runner-up finish this season that helped pave her way to win championship.

In Comp Eliminator, Chuck Haubiel, Gahanna, Ohio, took the win over Rick Brown, Lebanon, Ohio. Haubiel had the starting line advantage over Brown and scored a winning run of 8.175 seconds, 163.31 mph. This was Haubiel's fifth Lucas Oil Divisional race and his second win this season.

Another racer taking home the trophy this weekend and also collected his fifth Lucas Oil divisional win in Super Gas is Steve Hoyt, Fort Wayne, Ind. Hoyt faced off against Steven Furr, Harrisburg, N.C. and posted a winning run of 9.909 seconds, 161.29 mph. Hoyt had a great reaction time of 0.006 seconds off the tree and was able to take his '63 Corvette down the track to take home the trophy.

In the Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman Series, Jeffrey Barker, Kathleen, Ga., took home his 11th Lucas Oil divisional win. Barker won over Donny Urban, Pittsboro, N.C., and scored a winning run of 6.929 seconds, 161.32 mph. Urban went red on the tree and Barker posted his third win of the season.

Other racers visiting the winner's circle this weekend were Merrill Schrimscher, Lake Mary, Fla., in Super Stock; Randy Wilkes, Zanesville, Ohio, in Stock Eliminator; Raymond Miller, Spring City, Tenn., in Super Comp; and Lamar Stevenson, Montgomery, Ala., in Super Street. In the division's Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragster Series it was Mike Laws, Kathleen, Ga., taking the win.
