Louisiana racers stack up in Belle Rose

Sunday BELLE ROSE, La. – Four Louisiana racers took home wins at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at No Problem Raceway this weekend. Local runner David Latino, Donaldsonville, La., led the list that also included, P.J. Vicari, Marrero, La., Craig Bourgeois, Metairie, La., and Slate Cummings, Ponchatoula, La. Latino drove his '02 Pontiac to the Stock win in 10.306 seconds at 125.27 mph defeating Brenda Grubbs, Magnolia, Texas, in her '69 Camaro at 10.603, 122.98 in a double breakout final round. Vicari, who won the JEGS SPORTSnationals at Belle Rose earlier this year, repeated his performance taking the win in the Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster over Jimmy Arabie. Arabie took a slight lead off the line but Vicari ran him down with a 6.716, 190.65 mph lap in his '09 dragster. Defending South Central division Super Stock champion Cummings beat NHRA hitter David Rampy while Bourgeois knocked out Keith Raftery, Lake Charles, La., in the Orteq Top Sportsman class. Cummings used a hole shot starting line advantage in his '03 Cavalier as did Bourgeois in his '10 GTO clocking in at 8.028, 162.10. Michael Nash picked up his second win of the year in the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson with a lap of 8.186 seconds, 138.27 mph over Frederick Quiett, Baton Rouge, La., 8.860, 144.33. Other winners this weekend were Raymond Martin, Mt. Belvieu, Texas, in Comp Eliminator when Kevin Self left early with a red-light foul start, Alan Savage, Mexia, Texas, downed Allen Constantine, La Place, La., in Super Comp; John Wright, Carthage, Texas, defeated fellow Texas racer Jimmy Lewis, in Super Gas; and Tony Jones ran down Norman Griffin, Des Allemands, La., for the win in Super Street. South Central Division racers head to Tulsa Raceway Park for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 21-23. The event is the third of six events that run through October where competitors will earn points toward both national and divisional championships. Racers in nine different classes, including the series' Comp Eliminator, Sunset Racecraft Top Dragsters and Orteq Top Sportsman made qualifying and time trial runs today with eliminations in all classes scheduled for Sunday. Gates open Sunday at 8 a.m. and racing is set to begin at 9 a.m. followed by round 1 of eliminations. Tickets are $20 on Sunday for adults, children are $10 each and kids 10 and under are free with a paid adult. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2013 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only. The winning division and regional teams will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event. NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $14,000 champions' purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
