Severance and Hough win big at Champion Raceway

Sunday MEDFORD, Ore. – Joey Severance, Woodburn, Ore., won his third Northwest division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event in Top Alcohol Dragster this past weekend at Champion Raceway. Severance, who also won last month at the O'Reilly Auto Parts NHRA Northwest Nationals, met Ray Martin, Anchorage, Ala., in the final round. Although Martin had a quicker ET and speed, 5.527 seconds at 258.22 mph, Severance got off the line quicker and was able to claim the victory with a final pass of 5.550 seconds, 245.14 mph. Brian Hough, Junction City, Ore., also experience good fortune in threes. His win at Champion Raceway over the weekend in Top Alcohol Funny Car was his third straight Lucas Oil Series event win at the track in three years. Hough also is currently third in Northwest division points. In Comp Eliminator, Randy Jones held off Dale Giroux in the final round to earn the trip to the Winner's Circle. Jones, Monarch Beach, Calif., raced his '01 S-10 against Giroux, Canyon Creek, Alb., and his '04 Cavalier to earn his 4th place position in Northwest division points. Currently second place in national point standings and first in division for Super Stock, Jackie Alley had a win over the weekend to help her get there, her second divisional win of the season. The Eagle, Idaho, resident drove a '69 Camaro against the '68 Camaro that had Tom Armanino, San Mateo, Calif., behind the wheel. Off to a good start, Alley's reaction time set her off faster than Amanino and helped secure her winning pass of 9.848 seconds at 128.15 mph. Other California drivers dominated several classes over the weekend as well. In Stock Eliminator, Mike Loge, Antioch, Calif., came out strong and defeated Jim Devine, Yakima, Wash., in the finals. Kyle Rizzoli, San Luis Obispo, Calif., took home the win in Super Comp over Mike Shannon, Kelowna, B.C. Rizzoli's pass of 8.927 seconds at 156.94 mph earned him his second consecutive Northwest divisional win this year. Valinda, Calif., driver Val Torres, met Medford, Ore., driver Steve Apted in the finals. Both driving Corvettes, Torres outran the '67 version with his '63 during his final run of 9.926 seconds at 163.45 mph. In Sportsman Motorcycle, Garberville, Calif., rider John Widmann, took home the win to cap off California winners. Also taking homes wins over the weekend were a pair of Washington drivers and an Oregon resident. Josh Dalrymple, Sunnyside, Wash., raced his '67 Camaro against Travis Ringguth, Grand Praire, Alb., in the Super Street finals. Dalrymple ended up victorious with a 10.962 second run with a top speed of 143.37 mph. In Top Sportsman, Randy Johnson, Snohomish, Wash., defeated Mike Williams, Tilley, Alb., with a run of 7.716 seconds at 169.57 mph. Springfield, Ore., resident Mike Hilsendager, won in Top Dragster to bring home the final win of local drivers. Northwest Division racers now head for Woodburn, Ore., and Woodburn Dragstrip for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for the rain delayed event, September 16.
Saturday Racers made qualifying and time trial runs today which featured the 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars along with the highly competitive Comp Eliminator class. Sunday's action will include eliminations for all classes beginning at 9 a.m. with the alcohol classes set to run first round at noon. Gates open on Sunday at 8 a.m. Tickets are $20 for adults, children 11-14 are $10 and kids 10 and under are free with a paid adult. The event is one of six events in the Northwest Division where drivers across the country earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000. The division's Top Sportsman Series, Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event. The Northwest Championship will kick off when the gates open Saturday at 8 a.m. at Champion Raceway. Time trials begin at 9 a.m. There will also be three rounds of qualifying for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m. and first round for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car begin at noon. Tickets for the Champion Raceway event are $20 each, Saturday and Sunday and every ticket includes a Pit Pass. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2012 Jegs Allstars during the O'Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals in, 2012. Points are based on in-division races only. The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event. Any 2012 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.
