TOPEKA, Kan. – James Thompson, Jay Payne and Gary Stinnett each defended their event championship from a year ago taking wins at this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Heartland Championships at Heartland Park Topeka.
Thompson, Vernon, Texas, qualified No. 2 in Top Alcohol Dragster, defeated Jared Dreher, Clinton, Ind., and Gord Gingles, Winnipeg, Manit., in rounds 1 and 2, then outran No. 1 qualifier Jim Whiteley, Grand Junction, Colo., in the final for the win. Thompson ran 5.344 seconds at 267.75 mph to Whiteley's 5.380, 265.85.
Claremont, Calif., runner Payne, ran low E.T. (elapsed time) in each round of eliminations with runs of 5.68 seconds, 5.671, and 5.709 in the Top Alcohol Funny Car final against Roger Bateman, Grand Junction, Colo. Payne defeated Billy Davis, Rogers, Ark., and multi-time division champion Vern Moats in rounds 1 and 2.
Stinnett grabbed his third West Central Division Super Comp win of the year to go along with his national event win last week in Brainerd, Minn. The defending NHRA Lucas Oil National champion from nearby Emporia, Kan., beat fellow Kansas racer Kyle Fickler of Tonganoxie with a pass of 8.909 seconds at 175.48 mph.
In Comp Eliminator it was Lou Ficco Jr., Wheatridge, Colo., taking his second win of the year at Heartland Park. Ficco defeated former national champion Bruno Massel with a lap of 8.496, 117.49 to go along with his win back in May at the NHRA Summer Nationals at HPT over David Billingsley.
Billy Graham won one for the home state in the Fineline Madcap Top Dragster class as the Manhattan, Kan., resident went 197.25 mph in 6.917 seconds over Tom Williams, Lenardville, Kan., while reigning West Central division champion Curtis Sprackin picked up his second win of the year in the Sportsman Motorcycle class presented by Harley Davidson downing Tom Gilligan, Fremont, Neb.
Joining in on the winner's circle celebration were Bryan Chaney, Claremore, Okla., in Super Stock; Brent Bratsen, LaMarque, Texas, in Stock; Kevin Moore, Litterton, Colo., in Super Gas; Ray Dew, League City, Texas, in Super Street; and Danny Leibham, Tomball, Texas, in the Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman series.

TOPEKA, Kan. – NHRA West Central division racers are at Heartland Park Topeka to kick off the weekend's action for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 5 Heartland Championships. The event is the fifth of six West Central division events in the 2011 season where competitors will earn points toward both national and divisional championships.
Racers made initial qualifying and time trial runs today on the quarter-mile with racers in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car highlighting the day's action along with nearly 500 racers in eleven different classes. The alcohol dragsters and funny cars made two qualifying pass today and will make one more tomorrow at 11:30 a.m. before eliminations.
Saturday's gates open at 7 a.m. Time trials and qualifying will continue at 7:45 a.m. The division's Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman, Fineline Madcap Top Dragster and Comp Eliminator drivers will make their final qualifying run at 10:30 a.m. Eliminations are set to begin at noon and run into the night with Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car running round 1 at 6 p.m.

Qualifying and time trials kick off Friday at 9 a.m. and continue Saturday at 7:45 a.m. Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Comp Eliminator will have two qualifying runs starting at 3:45 p.m. and 6:15 p.m. on Friday and one session on Saturday starting at 10:30 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have two qualifying session on Friday starting at 5 and 7:30 p.m., and one on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. Eliminations start at noon on Saturday. Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car will run first round at 6 p.m.

BONUS PROGRAMS: NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by the 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.
JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 purse from Jegs High Performance. The 2012 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2012 Jegs Allstars during the O'Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals in July, 2012. Points are based on in-division races only.
The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.
Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2012 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.
AEROMOTIVE LOW QUALIFIER BONUS: A $3,000 bonus fund paid to the low qualifiers in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator at each of the division's six races.
