Sunday

BRAINERD, Minn. (May 30, 2011) – Richard Putz and Scott McVey took home big wins this weekend for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes event at Brainerd International Raceway.

Putz, Earlville, Iowa, and defending West Central Division Champion, saved his best pass of the day for the final round in Top Alcohol Dragster where he faced off against Jared Dreher, Clinton, Ind.  Putz's 5.380 second run at over 260 mph was too much for Dreher who clocked in at 5.530, 244.34.  Putz qualified 3rd and knocked out Scott Palmer, Marionville, Mo., and Randy Meyer, Spring Hill, Kan., in rounds 1 and 2 respectively.

McVey, Winnipeg, Manit., CAN., defeated the current West Central Division Champion Kirk Williams in the final of Top Alcohol Funny Car with a lap of 5.673 seconds, 254.09 mph to Williams' 5.929, 242.02.  MeVey's '06 Monte Carlo went quicker in each round beating Bruce Carlson, Prior Lake, Minn., in round 1 with a 6.328 and Kris Hool, Casper, Wyo., in round 2 at 5.693.

Pat Nahan won for the home state and St. Cloud, Minn., taking the title in Comp Eliminator with a pass of 7.469 seconds at 172.81 mph.  A number of Minnesota racers found the winner's circle including Greg Grundman also of St. Cloud, as he defeated Craig Pfanenstiel in Super Street with his '71 Camaro. Stock Eliminator saw Glen DeMenge, McGregor, Minn., hold off Ben Line, Cromwell, Minn., Mark Hovorka of Ramsey, Minn., won in Super Gas with his '81 Camaro against Bruce Johnson, Jordan, Minn., and Jason Clampitt, Lino Lakes, Minn., beat Mike Voss, Maplewood, Minn., in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.

Super Stock racer Justin Jenkins, Beatrice, Neb., took the win over Tim Mosbek, Andover, Minn., and division champion Gary Stinnett won in Super Comp out of Emporia, Kan.

Other winners in Brainerd were Monte Green in the division's Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman class and J.R. Lobner in Top Dragster.  Green, Haxtun, Colo., drove his '95 Probe to a run of 7.185 seconds, 191.73 for the win over William Goldammer and Lobner, Garner, Kan., went 6.986, 186.82 for the trophy.

West Central Division racers head to Bandimere Speedway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 17-19.

BRAINERD, Minn. – Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car drivers made their final qualifying runs today for this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes at Brainerd International Raceway.  Winners will take home their share of the prize money along with the coveted "NHRA Wally" trophy during winner's circle. 

Racing starts up at 9 a.m. on Sunday morning with round 1 of Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars set for noon.  Tickets are $20 for adults and children 5 and under are free with paid adult.  The track is located a few miles north of the Brainerd area off Highway 371, on the east side of the highway.  For more information please call BIR, (866) 444-4455 or visit www.BrainerdRaceway.com.

BRAINERD, Minn., – The National Hot Rod Association returned to Brainerd International Raceway this weekend for West Central division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes event.  Racing kicked off today with qualifying and time trials for more than 400 racers in eleven different classes battling it out on the quarter mile for both championship points and their share of the event purse and contingency payouts.

Racers in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Cars made their initial qualifying run today along with the rest of the classes in competition.  Qualifying and time trials will continue on Saturday beginning at 9 a.m.   Highlighting Saturday's action will be all two rounds of qualifying for the alcohol classes at 1 and 4 p.m.  Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Comp Eliminator will run their final qualifying at 12 and 3 p.m.

BRAINERD, Minn. - Thunder at the Lakes arrives to Brainerd International Raceway (BIR) for the NHRA West Central division's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series on May 27-29, 2011.  The event is the second of six in the West Central division where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000.  The division's Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman Series, West Central Division Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.

Gates at BIR open at 7 a.m. everyday.  Qualifying and time trials start Friday morning at 9 and continue Saturday at 9 a.m. as well.  Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Comp Eliminator will have qualifying runs at 1 and 3:30 p.m. on Friday and two sessions on Saturday at noon and 3 p.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have one qualifying session on Friday at 4:30 p.m., and two on Saturday, at 1 and 4 p.m.  Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars will run first round at noon.

Tickets for the Thunder at the Lake at BIR are $20 each day.  Children 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

THUNDER AT THE LAKES: Fact Sheet

WHAT: Thunder at the Lakes event where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000. SATURDAY, May 28 - Gates open at 7 a.m. Qualifying and time trials are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Top Sportsman, Top Dragster and Comp Eliminator qualifying is at 12 and 3 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car final qualifying sessions are at 1 and 4 p.m.

SUNDAY, May 29 - Gates open at 7 a.m. Eliminations begin at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car run first round of eliminations at noon.

BONUS PROGRAMS:
NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND
: a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by the 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 purse from Jegs High Performance. The 2011 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2011 Jegs Allstars during the O'Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals in July, 2011. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2011 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

AEROMOTIVE LOW QUALIFIER BONUS: A $3,000 bonus fund paid to the low qualifiers in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator at each of the division's six races. The best qualifying driver in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock will each get $200 per event, while the best qualifier in Stock Eliminator will get $100 per race.

The $2,750 champions' purse will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers.

NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $14,000 champions' purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
