BRADENTON, Fla.

Racing concluded this weekend at Bradenton Motorsports Park for the first NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event of the season with some familiar names competing.

A local to the track, Ed Richardson, Bradenton, Fla., took the win in Super Comp over Tyler Caheely from Rock Spring, Ga. Richardson drove his dragster to a victory with a run of 8.872 seconds at 179.10 mph.

Kris Hool, Cooper, Wyo., took home the championship trophy in Top Alcohol Funny Car defeating last year's Southeast Division champion, Mickey Ferro, Stamford, Conn., who broke in the final round. Hool drove his '10 Monte Carlo to a 5.600-second victory at 258.02 mph. Another 2010 Southeast Division champion, Ray Miller, finished in the runner-up spot at Bradenton. Miller, running in Top Dragster, made the short trip from Spring Hill, Fla., and lost in the final round to Dwayne Roberts. Roberts, from Lakeland, Fla., ran 7.045 seconds at 179.24 mph in his dragster.

Al Moeser, Hill Town, Pa., qualified in the top spot earlier in the weekend in Top Alcohol Dragster and continued his momentum all the way to the final round defeating Artie Allen, Jackonsonville, Fla., with a 5.308 second run at 262.23 mph. Rick Twitchell also qualified in the No. 1 spot and held on to that position throughout the weekend leading to a win in Super Stock. Making the trip from Cape Coral, Fla., Twitchell defeated Jeff Strickland, Red Bay, Ala., with a run of 10.748 at 96.74 in his '03 S-10.

Arnie Martel, Tewksbury, Mass., ran his '07 GTO in defeating the No. 1 qualifier, Fred Allen, Mary Esther, Fla., earning him the win in Competition Eliminator. In Stock Eliminator, Merrill Schrimscher, Lake Mary, Fla., defeated Kevin Helms, Schriever, La., in the final round at Bradenton when Helms fouled. Schrimscher drove his '85 Camaro to a 13.111 second run at 73.57 mph for the victory. In Super Street, Rudy Mathews, Ohio City, Ohio, took the win over Mike Griggs, Ocala, Fla., in his '69 Camaro with a run of 10.911 seconds at 140.77 mph.

In Super Gas and Top Sportsman, '63 Corvettes were the big winners. In Super Gas, Peter Biondo, Maspeth, N.Y., drove his Corvette for 9.910 seconds at 155.79 mph to defeat Vince Costa, Jr., Seffner, Fla. In Top Sportsman, Kenny Burgess, Ellenton, Fla., drove his '63 Corvette to victory over Calvin Hornes, Sr., Palmetto, Fla., by running at 7.200 seconds at 157.95 mph.

New to the NHRA Southeast Division this year are three index classes that will run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series. Matt Powell, Ty Ty, Ga., took the win in the 10.00 class while Shane Williams, Knoxville, Tenn., won in 12.00. Bradenton, Fla., racer Trent Thomas fell in the 11.00 final to Bob George, Satellite Beach, Fla.

Saturday

BRADENTON, Fla. – Day two is in the books and the fields are set for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car racers made two qualifying runs along with final qualifying and time trials in the other eight classes of competition.  Racing continues with eliminations at 9 a.m. on Sunday.  Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator, and Top Sportsman will take to the track at 10 a.m. for their first round of eliminations followed by Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car at 1 p.m.

BRADENTON, Fla. – The 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Season officially kicked off today at Bradenton Motorsports Park in Bradenton, Fla., for the first of six events in the NHRA Southeast Division.  The event is also the first of 42 that will take place throughout the year from coast to coast.

Upwards of 400 of the best racers from the region took to the track in hopes of grabbing an early lead in the points battle toward both national and divisional championships along with local racers and defending division champions Joseph Skala, Palmetto, Fla., and Ray Miller, Spring Hill, Fla.  Both Skala and Miller look to defend their titles in Super Street and Top Dragster respectively as does  Luke Bogacki of Carterville, Ill., who is defending two titles taking home the champions trophy in both Stock Eliminator and Super Comp last year.

Racers made initial qualifying and time trial runs in today's action which featured the highly competitive Comp Eliminator class as well as the division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman and Hickory Enclosed Trail Sales Top Dragster classes.  Saturday action will include final qualifying and time trails for all classes along with two rounds of qualifying for the 260 mph Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars scheduled for 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. 

Gates open on Saturday at 8 a.m. with racing scheduled to start at 9 a.m.  Tickets for either Saturday or Sunday are $20, children 11 and under are free with a paid adult. BRADENTON, Fla. - Bradenton Motorsports Park will open the 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series season on February 11-13 with the first of five Lucas Oil Series events lined up for the NHRA's Southeast division. The event is one of 41 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000.

Gates at Bradenton Motorsports Park open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start at 10 a.m. Friday and continue Saturday at 9 a.m. Top Sportsman, Comp Eliminator and Top Dragster will have one qualifying run on Friday, starting at 4 p.m., and two rounds on Saturday at 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars will have two qualifying passes on Saturday, at 2:30 and 5:30 p.m. Eliminations start Sunday morning at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at 1 p.m.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are $20 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday. A three-day pass is $50. Children 11 and younger are admitted free with a paid adult.

BONUS PROGRAMS

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by the 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2011 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2011 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Winners in Top Sportsman and Top Dragster will each earn $5,000. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2011 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman Series: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships and a share in the year-end purse.
