KENT, Wash. (August 22, 2010) – Mike Austin and Brian Hough raced to victory this weekend at Pacific Raceways and the NHRA Northwest Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series.
Austin, Medford, Ore., advanced to his second final in two days facing off against Shawn Cowie, Delta, B.C. in both and getting the better of Cowie in Saturday night's final in Top Alcohol Dragster. Austin, who is battling Cowie for the division championship, outran Cowie with a 5.499 second pass at 259.86 mph to Cowie's 5.575, 240.25. On Friday, Cowie got the best of Austin in the completion of the rain delayed Lucas Oil event from Mission Raceway Park.
Fellow Oregon racer Hough of Junction City, beat Jeff Ashwell in round one then had a bye run in the semifinals in advancing to the Top Alcohol Funny Car final with Southern California racer Steve Gasparrelli of West Covina. Hough's 5.624 second lap at 258.53 proved too much for Gasparrelli's 5.804 at 252.95. Both racers are in the top 10 points nationally. Hough has all but clinched the NHRA Northwest division championship where Gasparrelli is in contention for the NHRA Pacific Division.
Darryn O'Connor also doubled this weekend out of Fort St. John, B.C. in the Top Sportsman class winning over Craig Olson with a 7.381 at 178.95 after taking the Mission Raceway win on Thursday against Spencer Martin.
The state of Washington was well represented in the winner's circle led by Aaron Strong, Auburn, Wash., over Brandon Huhtala in Comp Eliminator and Dallas Glenn, Covington, Wash., defeating Tommy Gaynor, Vancouver, Wash., in Stock. Also winning for the home state were Michael Dalrymple, Sunnyside, in Super Comp; Dustin Martin, Federal Way, in Super Street; Brian Phillips, Prosser, in Top Dragster; Jeff Havens, Yakima, in the Sportsman Motorcycle class presented by Harley Davidson; Jody Murray, Bonny Lake, in Super Pro; and Allen Macham, Everett, in Pro ET.
In the Super Stock class it was Art Congdon, Calgary, Alb., holding off Jim Isherwood of Sumas, Wash., and Mike Shannon, Kelowna, B.C., downed Andy Boen, Yakima, Wash., in the Super Gas class with his 57 Corvette.

KENT, Wash. – Pacific Raceways opened its doors today to the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, part of their 50th Anniversary Celebration. More than 400 of the best racer in the NHRA Northwest Division took to the track in search of championship points toward both national and divisional titles.
Racers made opening qualifying and time trial runs today and will follow up on Saturday with final qualifying and time trails for most classes. The Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol Funny Cars will run all three rounds of eliminations on Saturday night along with the track's 50th Anniversary Celebration that also includes exhibition runs by Nitro Funny Cars and Pro Mods followed by a firework show to cap off the night's activities.
Gates open on Saturday at 8 a.m. with final qualifying and time trials beginning at 10 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars run round one at 3 p.m. The exhibition runs and fireworks are scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Tickets for either Saturday or Sunday are $20, children 7-15 are $5 each day and kids 6 and under are free. Mission makeup event
KENT, Wash. (August 20, 2010) – Shawn Cowie and Brain Hough took home the hardware for the delayed Lordco Auto Parts B.C. Nationals and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series. Mother Nature got the best of the event on its originally scheduled weekend at Mission Raceway Park back in May forcing officials to complete the event this weekend in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Northwest divisional event at Pacific Raceways.
Cowie, Delta, B.C., took out division point's leader Mike Austin for the win in Top Alcohol Dragster running 5.433 seconds at 240.29 mph. Austin left early with a red light and slowed to a 7.675 second lap.
Hough, Junction City, Ore., qualified No. 1 and worked his way to the final round match up with John Evanchuk, Edmonton, Alb., taking the win in 5.639 seconds at 254.90 mph to Evanchuk's 5.742, 248.66.
Three Canadian racers got in on the action with Rob Harrison of North Vancouver, B.C. taking the win over Bob Marshall, Langley, B.C. in Comp Eliminator in his '07 Cavalier. Joining Harrison were Darryn O'Conner, Fort St. John, B.C., winning in Top Sportsman with a time of 7.451 seconds at 185.28 mph against Spencer Martin and his '63 Corvette out of Anchorage, Alaska, and Sherwood Park, Alb., racer Norm Lapointe in his '07 Cobalt in Super Stock who took out Rodney Stults, Marysville, Wash.
The Washington racers would not be out down as they swept the index classes as Antony Castillo, Grandview, Wash., beat Marion Hurst, Tacoma, Wash., when Hurst broke out in Super Comp; Chris Cannon, Bothell, Wash., held off Dave Kelly, Walla Walla, Wash., in Super Gas; and Wayne Linder Jr., Outlook, Wash., knocked out Jim Ellingson, Colbert, Wash., in Super Street.
Other winners included Sean Cour, Brush Prairie, Wash., in Stock Eliminator and his '10 Mustang; Oregon racer John Chitwood of St. Helens in Top Dragster posting a lap of 7.500 seconds at 176.12 mph; and Brett Payne, Chilliwack, B.C. over Den Tempel, Mission, B.C. in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.
The Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event for Pacific Raceways also kicked off today with day one of qualifying and time trials. The action continues tomorrow with a special Pacific Raceways 50th Anniversary Celebration featuring Nitro Funny Cars, Pro Mods, all three rounds of eliminations for the Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars all culminating with a fireworks show. KENT, Wash. - Pacific Raceways will host the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series August 20 - 22, 2010. The event is the fifth of six events in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northwest Division where drivers across the country earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000. The division's Top Sportsman Series, Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.
On tap for Saturday night and the Pacific Raceways 50th Anniversary Celebration is all three rounds of Eliminations for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car along with a special exhibition featuring Nostalgia Nitro Funny Cars, Pro Mods and Fireworks.
Gates at Pacific Raceways open at 8 a.m. on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Qualifying and time trials begin Friday at 10 a.m. and continue on Saturday at 10 a.m. again. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have three qualifying runs on Friday, at 1:30, 4, & 7 p.m. and eliminations at 3 p.m. on Saturday. Eliminations continue Sunday at 10 a.m. The exhibition Nitro Funny Cars and Pro Mods begin at 7 p.m. on Saturday night.

BONUS PROGRAMS: NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2010 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.
JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 purse from Jegs High Performance. The 2011 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2011 Jegs Allstars during the United Association Route 66 NHRA Nationals in June, 2011. Points are based on in-division races only.
The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.
Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2011 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.
NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships. The $14,000 champions' purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
