COMMERCE, Ga. (September 13, 2009) – The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, Southeast division event at Atlanta Dragway is in the books with Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Duane Shields, Boulder City, Nev., and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Steve Harker out of Gainesville, Ga., taking home the goods. This weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event wraps up the fifth of six in Southeast division competition.
Shields picked up his second divisional of the season when he knocked out Robin Samsel of Marion, Ind., for the win. His pass of 5.372 seconds at 263.72 took the win light and a hold of the lead in the Southeast points standings.
Harker, who races out of the South Central division, defeated the No.1 qualifier Tony Bartone of Long Island City, N.Y., in the final. His lap of 5.635 seconds at 256.99 mph was more than enough to grab the hardware and earn his second divisional win of the season.
Other top winners included Arnie Martel, Tewksbury, Mass., in Comp Eliminator; Hugh Meeks of Pike Road, Ala., in Super Stock; and Jack Zimmerman out of Clemmons, N.C., in Stock. Lauren Freer, Lewisville, N.C., took the win in Super Comp; Frank Altilio of Ocoee, Fla., was victorious in Super Gas; and the Super Street title went to Bill Carmichael, Cocoa, Fla.
The division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman Series trophy went to Ray Miller of Spring Hill, Fla., and William Thigpen out of Flowery Branch, Ga., seized the win in the Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster Series.
The next Southeast division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event is at Silver Dollar Raceway. The race is slated for Oct. 16-18, which will conclude the divisional series.

COMMERCE, Ga. (September 12, 2009) – In the final rounds of qualifying at Atlanta Dragway, Top Alcohol Dragster pilot Duane Shields, Boulder City, Nev., and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Tony Bartone, Long Island City, N.Y., claimed the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes. This weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, which will wrap up tomorrow with eliminations, is the fifth of six in Southeast division competition
After two qualifying passes, Shields was able to capture the pole with a 5.377 second, 266.74 mph pass. He currently has one division win this season and is making a late push to grab the Southeast title, sitting just eleven points behind the No.4 qualifier, Artie Allen of Jacksonville, Fla.
Bartone, who races out of the Pacific division, grabbed the No.1 spot from a very competitive field. He wheeled his '09 Mustang down the track at 5.660 second, 253.52 mph in search of his first division win of the year.
Top qualifiers in other classes include Comp Eliminator driver Brian Browell, Lafayette, Ind.; Bobby Dennis of Shorter, Ala., in Super Stock; and Corbitt Marshburn, Clinton, N.C., remained at the top of Stock Eliminator. Ronnie Davis of Suwanee, Ga., was the No.1 qualifier in Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman category and Eddie Careccia, Mars Hill, Fla., pieced together a 6.148 second, 231.83 mph lap to grab the pole in the Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster Series.
Racing continues Sunday with gates opening at 8 a.m. and eliminations beginning at 9 a.m. First round of eliminations for Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car are scheduled 1 p.m.

COMMERCE, Ga. (September 11, 2009) – In the first rounds of qualifying at Atlanta Dragway, local Ronnie Davis of Suwanee, Ga., grabbed the No.1 qualifying position in the division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman category. This weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, which runs through Sunday, is the fifth of six in Southeast division competition. Top Alcohol Dragster and Funny Car qualifying is set to kick off tomorrow afternoon.
Davis jumped into the top spot by laying down a 6.352 second, 219.04 mph pass. He currently sits in fourth place of the divisional points standings with the event's No. 9 qualifier, Jeffrey Barker of Warner-Robins, Ga., holding onto the lead.
Comp Eliminator is lead by North Central competitor Brian Browell of Lafayette, Ind., with hitters Lee Sharp, Maryville, Tenn., and Arnie Martel of Tewksbury, Mass., sitting No.2 and No.3 respectively. Bobby Dennis of Shorter, Ala., seized the top spot in Super Stock; Corbitt Marshburn, Clinton, N.C., took the pole in Stock Eliminator; and Jody Stroud from Chesterfield, S.C., outran the field in the Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster with an impressive 6.240 seconds, 224.92 mph lap.
Racing continues Saturday morning with gates opening at 8 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials will begin at 9:30 a.m. Eliminations begin Sunday morning at 9. COMMERCE, Ga. – Atlanta Dragway will host the NHRA Southeast division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series for three days, September 11-13. The race is the fifth of six in division competition and will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, fighting for points leading to divisional and national championships. The division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman Series and Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster Series will also be run in conjunction with the event.
Artie Allen is leading the division's Top Alcohol Dragster points. After failing to make the eight-car field at the division's season opener in Bradenton, Fla., the Jacksonville, Fla., resident went on to four consecutive final-round appearances. He was runner-up at the events at Gainesville (Fla.) Raceway, South Georgia Motorsports Park in Cecil, Ga., and an out-of-division race in Indianapolis. Bill Evans, Miramar, Fla., is just 10 clicks behind Allen. Evans was runner-up in Bradenton and scored the win over Allen in Cecil. He has also been to the semis twice.
In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Mickey Ferro of Stamford, Conn., is leading the points over perennial division champ Jay Payne. Ferro opened the year with a win in Bradenton and was runner-up in Cecil and scored an out-of-division win in Reading, Pa. Payne, meanwhile, didn't get out of the first round in Bradenton but won in Gainesville. Since then the Claremont, Calif., resident has been racing out-of-division events closer to home. He picked up a win in Woodburn, Ore., and went to the semis in Las Vegas and Sonoma, Calif.
Gates at Atlanta Dragway open at 8 a.m. each day. Qualifying and time trials start Friday at noon and continue Saturday at 9:30 a.m. Racers in Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman will qualify once on Friday, starting at 4 p.m., and twice on Saturday, starting at 2 and 5 p.m. Competitors in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car have two qualifying sessions, Saturday at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m. Eliminations start Sunday morning at 9. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at 1 p.m.

The NHRA Southeast division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Season will come to a close in October. Silver Dollar Raceway in Reynolds, Ga., will host the last race of the season Oct. 16-18.

WHAT: NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships. Categories include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The event is the fifth of six in Southeast Division competition. The division's Davis Golf Carts Top Sportsman Series and Hickory Enclosed Trailer Sales Top Dragster Series will also be run in conjunction with the event.

SCHEDULE: Time trials and qualifying schedule for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series:
FRIDAY, Sept. 11 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Qualifying and time trials begin at noon. Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman will qualify beginning at 4 p.m.
SATURDAY, Sept. 12 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Final qualifying and time trials begin at 9:30 a.m. Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman qualify starting at 2 and 5 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualifying is at 3:30 and 6:30 p.m.
SUNDAY, Sept. 13 -- Gates open at 8 a.m. Eliminations begin at 9 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car run first round at 1 p.m.

PURSE: The NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series competitors will vie for cash and contingency awards of $166,275, as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000.

BONUS PROGRAMS: NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2009 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions. Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.
JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance. The 2010 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2010 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only.
The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Winners in Top Sportsman and Top Dragster will each earn $5,000. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.
Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2010 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.
