Sunday

ACTON, Mont. (August 23, 2009) – In the final results from Yellowstone Drag Strip and the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series 6th Annual Summer Championships it was Shawn Cowie, Delta, B.C., and Sean O'Bannon, Ontario, Calif., taking the wins and the trophies.

Cowie ran in the 5.50's (seconds) all day working his way through the field and matched up against Jim Whiteley, Grand Junction Colo., in the final. Cowie ran a 5.513 second pass at 261.67 to Whiteley's slowing 7.757, 116.61 for the win which should give Cowie the Northwest Division Championship and drastically help his chances of a National Championship as well.

O'Bannon came from the No. 1 qualifying position to post the win over Ken Webster who is battling for the division championship with Brian Hough. O'Bannon runs out of the NHRA Pacific Division, clocking in at 5.795 seconds at 248.52 mph to Webster's 5.944, 244.92 mph. Hough suffered a first round loss to Clint Thompson which will hurt his chances of repeating as the Northwest Champ.

Billings' own Kristi Dever took the win in Top Dragster with a lap of 7.568, 177.84 mph in her dragster over Darren Stettner who had mechanical problems from the start while Clint Sallee added a win for the home state running out of Glendive, Mont., in the Comp Eliminator field over Dale Giroux, Canyon Creek, Alb., CAN.

In Super Stock it was Carroll Warling, Brighton, Colo., driving to the win over Norm Lapointe, and Aldon Miller of Idaho Falls, Idaho, ousted Jon Irving, Boulder City, Nev.

Other winners were Michael Dalrymple, Sunnyside, Wash., in Super Comp; Mark Resen, Spokane, Wash., in Super Gas; Bobi Legner, Pierre, S.D., in Super Street; Barry Daniluk, Red Deer, Alb., CAN., in the Auto Max USA Top Sportsman class; and Rick Newport of West Valley, Utah, in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.

 Northwest Division racers head to Champion Raceway for the last stop in the NHRA Northwest Division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, September 25-26.

ACTON, Mont. (August 22, 2009) – In the final rounds of qualifying for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series 6th Annual Summer Championships at Yellowstone Drag Strip it was Jim Whiteley and Sean O'Bannon taking the pole positions in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car.

Whiteley of Grand Junction, Colo., picked up nearly a tenth of a second in jumping to the No. 1 spot over division point's leader Shawn Cowie. Whiteley clocked in at 5.505 seconds, 257.92 mph with Cowie holding on to the second spot at 5.548, 257.19 and Kevin Wayman in third at 5.549, 257.19.

Ontario, Calif., racer O'Bannon bettered his Friday mark of 5.839 seconds with a 5.806 second run at 248.29 mph to lead the field.  O'Bannon who runs out of the NHRA Pacific Division is followed by Ken Webster of Red Deer, A.B., CAN., at 5.883 seconds, 245.32 mph.  Webster is tied for the points lead in the Northwest division with No. 4 qualifier Brian Hough who is looking to repeat as the division champion.

Carroll Warling, Brighton, Colo., and Tony Hernandez, Denver, held onto the top spots in Super Stock and Stock respectively. Warling is followed by Byron Setters, Red Deer, A.B., CAN., while Mike Coe, Grand Junction, Colo., trails  Hernandez's and his '66 Corvette .

Barry Daniluk, also of Red Deer, A.B., CAN., is the lone Auto Max USA Top Sportsman racer to reach the 200 mph mark taking the No. 1 spot at 200.20 mph in 6.828 seconds with Dave Slatten, Ft. Collins, Colo., in second at 7.180, 192.52.  Barry's son Steve just missed equaling Dad qualifying No. 2 in Top Dragster behind Steve Cook of Rexburg, Idaho.  Cook clocked in at 6.903, 195.08 with Steve Daniluk posting a run of 6.980, 191.97 mph.  Four hometown drivers from Billings, Mont., round out the top ten in Top Sportsman with Brian Steif and his '63 Corvette in sixth at 7.517, 182.50.

In the Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson class it was Leeland King, Shelton, Wash., making the jump to the top with a 0.007 second reaction time on his '90 ZX-7.  Rick Newport, West Valley, Utah., is second at 0.009 seconds.

Racing continues Sunday at Yellowstone Drag Strip.  Gates open at 8 a.m with racing kicking off at 9 a.m.  Round one of Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars is set for noon.

ACTON, Mont. (August 21, 2009) – In the first rounds of qualifying at Yellowstone Drag Strip, for the 6th Annual Summer Championships and the second to last event in the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Northwest Division Top Alcohol Dragster driver Shawn Cowie, Delta, B.C., CAN., and Top Alcohol Funny Car pilot Sean O'Bannon, Ontario, Calif., took the No. 1 qualifying positions in their classes.

Cowie outran the field with a pass of 5.579 seconds at 257.19 mph with Kevin Wayman and defending event champion Jim Whiteley landing in the No.'s 2 and 3 positions.  Cowie has all but clinched the Northwest Division Championship with a 168 point lead but sits second in the national points chase just twelve points behind 2008 Champion Bill Reichert.

O'Bannon who is in a battle for second place in national points made a 5.839-second, 246.53 mph run to take the pole.  Defending Northwest Division Champion Brian Hough is in second at 5.958, 242.41 and is looking to break the tie he is in for the division funny car points lead with Ken Webster who is qualified fifth.

A pair of Colorado racers are one and two in Comp Eliminator with Clint Neff, Arvada, Colo., putting his '23 Ford on top followed by Kevin Smith, Parker, Colo.

Steve Cook and Barry Daniluk took the pole positions in Top Dragster and the Auto Max USA Top Sportsman classes respectively.  Cook, Rexburg, Idaho, ran 6.903 seconds at 195.08 mph and is followed by Barry's son Steve Daniluk at 6.980, 191.97 mph.

Barry Daniluk, Red Deer, Alberta, CAN., clocked in at 6.834 seconds, 199.52 for the only 6-second run in the top sportsman field.  Todd Fleck, Medicine Hat, Alberta, CAN., and Dave Slatten, Ft. Collins, Colo., are second and third.

Carroll Warling, Brighton, Colo., leads the Super Stock field followed by Byron Setters, Red Deer, Alberta, CAN., and Tony Hernandez of Denver, is on top in Stock Eliminator in his '66 Corvette while Mike Coe, Grand Junction, Colo., sits in second.

In the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, Miles Hauer of Seattle is No. 1 on his '04 Koenig followed by Rick Newport in second out of West Valley, Utah.

Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Yellowstone Drag Strip with racers earning points toward both national and divisional championship and a share of more than a half of a million dollars in year end prize money.  Gates open at 8 a.m. each day with racing scheduled to begin at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragsters and Funny Cars will receive two additional qualifying runs on Saturday at noon and 4 p.m.

ACTON, Mont. – Yellowstone Drag Strip will host the 6th Annual Summer Championships, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, August 21-23, 2009.  The race is the sixth of seven on the division calendar and will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, vying for points leading to divisional and national championships.  The division's Auto Max USA Top Sportsman Series, Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.

Coming in to the weekend, Delta, B.C., racer Shawn Cowie has a substantial lead in the Top Alcohol Dragster points.  Cowie has been to five races and scored five wins.  He opened the year with out-of-division races in Chandler, Ariz., and Las Vegas.  Then he raced at his home track, Mission (B.C.) Raceway Park, before heading to Spokane (Wash.) County Raceway and Pacific Raceways in Kent, Wash.  Cowie has a lead of more than 160 points over the No. 2 racer, reigning division champion Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash.  Severance was runner-up to Cowie in Spokane and Kent and has been to the semis in Las Vegas, Mission and Woodburn.

In Top Alcohol Funny Car competition, defending division champ Brian Hough and Ken Webster are tied for first place.  Both racers have a win and two semifinal-round showings to their credit.  Hough, a resident of Junction City, Ore., took the win in Mission and went to the semis in Spokane and Kent while Red Deer, Alb., racer Webster won in Spokane and reached the semis in Kent and at Woodburn (Ore.) Dragstrip.

Gates at Yellowstone Drag Strip open at 8 a.m. each day.  Qualifying and time trials start at 9 a.m. Friday and continue Saturday at 9 a.m.  Racers in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will qualify once on Friday, at 6 p.m., and twice on Saturday, at noon and 4 p.m.  Eliminations start Sunday morning at 9.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round of eliminations at noon.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event are $10 Friday, $15 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children 6 to 14 years old are $5 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free.

NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND -- a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2009 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions.  Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance.  The 2010 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster.  The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2010 Jegs Allstars.  Points are based on in-division races only. 

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions.  Winners in Top Sportsman and Top Dragster will each earn $5,000.  Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece.  Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants.  Any 2010 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships.  The $14,000 champions' purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
