WOODBURN, Ore. – Woodburn Dragstrip will host the Les Schwab Tires Challenge, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, July 10-12, 2009.  The race is the fifth of seven in NHRA's Northwest division and will feature drivers in eight categories, including 250 mph Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car, vying for points leading to divisional and national championships.  The division's Auto Max USA Top Sportsman Series, Top Dragster Series and the Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.

There is a tight battle brewing for the division title in the Top Alcohol Funny Car ranks where a scant 22 points separates first place from third.  Reigning division champion, Junction City, Ore., racer Brian Hough, is leading the charge after scoring a win at Mission (B.C.) Raceway Park and going to the semis at the division's last two races, at Spokane (Wash.) County Dragway and Pacific Raceways in Seattle.  However, Ken Webster of Red Deer, Alb., is just one point back.  Webster won in Spokane and went to the semis in Seattle.  Klamath Falls, Ore., racer Clint Thompson is also in hot pursuit.  Thompson's best showing was his runner-up finish in Seattle.

Things are much clearer in the Top Alcohol Dragster class.  Shawn Cowie is leading the points handily after scoring five wins in as many races.  The Delta, B.C., resident started the season with wins at out-of-division races in Chandler, Ariz., and Las Vegas then went on to win the three Northwest division races he's attended.  Current division champion Joey Severance of Spanaway, Wash., is in second place after scoring runner-up points to Cowie in Spokane and Seattle.  In Seattle, former Northwest division champion Steve Federlin was back behind the wheel of his dragster for the first time in two years.  The Oregon City resident, who has four division titles to his credit, went to the semis.

Gates at Woodburn Dragstrip open at 8 a.m. every day.  Qualifying and time trials start Friday at 9 a.m. and continue Saturday morning at 9.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have one qualifying run on Friday, at 3 p.m., and two on Saturday, at noon and 4 p.m.  Eliminations start Sunday at 9 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round at noon.
