Sunday BRAINERD, Minn.– Doug Engels qualified No. 1 in Comp Eliminator and out ran the competition straight to the winners circle for this weekend's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes at Brainerd International Raceway. Engels was joined by J.R. Lobner, Paul Pittman and the rest of the winners in the celebration. Engels, Watertown, S.D., faced off with number three qualifier Clint Sallee, Glendive, Mont., and had the power to hold off Sallee with a 7.201 second lap at 185.05 mph to Sallee's quicker 6.797, 203.49. Both drivers are former West Central division champions. Lobner, Gardner, Kan., was out first on Brad Basgall in the Fineline Graphics / Madcap Racing Top Dragster class with a .008 second reaction time and cruised to 6.963 second win as Basgall had problems from the start. In the Jerry Haas Race Cars Top Sportsman class it was Pittman, Bloomington, Minn., taking the win over Tom Schmidt, Lindstrom, Minn., who was out first but ran too quick by .013 seconds. Pittman went 6.656 on the 6.64 dial at 212.23 mph in his '13 Camaro for the win. Abe Loewen and Tyler Wudarczky captured the wins in Super Stock and Stock respectively. Loewen, Regina, Sask., took the holeshot on Mark Jenkins, Wymore, Neb., and ran 9.526 on the 9.52 dial to down Jenkins. Wudarczyk, Wakarusa, Kan., drove his '69 Nova past Ben Line, International Falls, Minn., covering the quarter mile in 11.472 seconds at just over 100 mph. Three Minnesota racers won in the super index classes as Jordan Pratt downed Austin Sharpe in Super Comp, Mark McMasters ousted Chuck Rose in Super Gas and Tony Leonard knocked off Jeff Landholm in Super Street. Pratt and Sharpe were close off the line but Pratt, Otsego, Minn., was better at the stripe in a double break out 8.894 to an 8.855. McMasters, Owatonna, Minn., was better at both ends of the tracks running 9.899 seconds, just .001 off the index, and Leonard, Hastings, Minn., had a tenth of a second lead at the start with a near perfect 10.901 second pass to hold off Jeff Landholm. In Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley-Davidson, it was Cameron Belisle out of Hugo, Minn., winning over Jason Clampitt, Lino Lakes, Minn. Clampitt was out first but Belisle had the power to run him down posting a 9.335 second pass on his '90 Kawasaki at 132.06 mph. In the Super Shootouts, Chris Bishop, Grand Rapids, Minn., beat Jeremy Lehrke in Super Comp; John Gosh, Big Lake, Minn., ended Russ Ginger's day in Super Gas; and Laurie Pederson-Duffield won over Amy Jo Luberda in Super Street. Adman Kritzky and Candace Jurgens took the honors in the NHRA Summit Jr. Drag Racing League. Kritzky, St Paul Park, Min., held off local racer Chandler Niemeyer, Brainerd, Minn., in the 8-12 year old class and Jurgens, Watertown, S.D., beat Meagen Neil in the 13-17 year old division. West Central Division racers head to Bandimere Speedway for the next NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, June 19-21. Saturday BRAINERD, Minn. – Racing kicked off today for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Thunder at the Lakes Day at Brainerd International Raceway. The event is the second in the NHRA West Central Division with racers earning points toward both national and divisional championships along with their share of the event purse and contingency money. The West Central Division stretches from Wyoming to Wisconsin and from Colorado to Kansas, and includes parts of Canada. The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2015 Jegs Allstars. Points are based on in-division races only. The winning regional and division team will share $25,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions. Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece. Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event. Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2015 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled. AEROMOTIVE LOW QUALIFIER BONUS: A $3,000 bonus fund paid to the low qualifiers in Comp Eliminator, Super Stock and Stock Eliminator at each of the division's six races.
