Sunday

COMMERCE, Ga. – Jeffrey Barker, Bo Butner and Lauren Freer all doubled up this weekend at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Division 2 Doubleheader at Atlanta Dragway.

Barker, Kathleen, Ga., took home a pair of trophies in the Davis Golf Cart Top Sportsman series winning the first event on Friday then again in Sunday's second half of the doubleheader. Barker took out Sandy Wilkins, Mt. Ulla, N.C., running 6.626 seconds at 201.40 mph to Wilkins' 6.826, 195.99 then faced off with Robert Mandell, Culleoka, Tenn., on Sunday winning in 6.656, 205.91 to Mandell's 7.005, 187.34 in his '55 Chevy.

Butner, Floyd Knobs, Ind., meet up with Jenny Treadwell, Mount Plymouth, Fla., in Comp Eliminator for race No. 1 holding on for the win in 8.807 seconds at 155.01 mph. On Sunday, Butner worked his magic in Stock Eliminator and his '14 Mustang advancing and beating Drew Skillman in an all Mustang final 10.274, 129.83 to a quicker 9.106, 143.95. Skillman was looking to join the list of double winners having beat Dan Fletcher, Churchville, N.Y., in Friday's Stock Eliminator final round. Skillman's 9.040, 144.21 was more than enough for Fletcher's '69 Camaro clocking in at 11.994, 105.46.

Like Butner, Freer won in two classes taking the win over Michael Rastall in the Hickory Enclosed Trailers Top Dragster on Friday and Luck Bogacki in Super Gas on Sunday. Freer, Mooresville, N.C., clocked in at 6.835, 195.14 mph against Rastall and won on a double breakout in Super Gas over Bogacki, Carterville, Ill.

It was a family affair for Edmond and Ryan Richardson out of Greenbrier, Tenn., as Ryan took home the honors in Super Comp on Friday when TJ Tindle fouled at the start then Ryan's dad Edmond took the Super Comp trophy on Sunday ending Brad Plourd's day.

Edmond's brother Scotty was looking for his third win of the year in Comp Eliminator but was denied by David Rampy who drove his '32 roadster to yet another win in Sunday's Comp final round. Rampy has 83 wins on the national event circuit and numerous divisional wins as well.

Travis Bryant and Shane Williams nearly doubled in the 10.00 and 12.00 Index classes with Bryant, Bowman, Ga., downing Matt Weston on Friday then losing to Chris Runnels, Joelton, Tenn., in Sunday's final. Williams lost to Michael Smith, Ocoee, Fla., and his '96 Firebird on Friday and to Don Norris, Royston, Ga., and his '86 Camaro on Sunday. Even though Travis missed the double, the Bryant family did not as Travis' dad Wade won the 11.00 Index on Sunday knocking out Jack Aspinwall on a hole shot, 11.063 to 11.052.

Rounding out Friday's winners were Jeff Dona, Gordonville, Mo., over Joe Tysinger in Super Stock; Raymond Miller, Spring Hill, Fla., beat David Owens in Super Gas; Ronnie Maggart, Carthage, Tenn., defeated Mike Desio in Super Street; and Tom Kriner, Daytona Beach, Fla., in 11.00 Index over Dallas Burger, Sumner, Ga.

Other winners on Sunday were Peter Biondo in Super Stock against Jimmy Hidalgo Jr.; Mike Griggs, Ocala, Fla., upended Tracey Guffey in Super Street and Jeff Strickland, Red Bay, Ala., beat Steven Furr in Top Dragster.

Southeast Division racers are back at Atlanta Dragway in two weeks for the Summit Racing Equipment NHRA Southern Nationals when they will be joined by the racers in the NHRA Mello Yello Drag Racing Series May 16-18.
