Sunday

ENNIS, Texas – Four Texas racers were among the winners this past weekend for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Texas Motorplex including Dick Maris in Comp Eliminator and Danny Leibham in Top Sportsman.

Maris, Montgomery, Texas, took the easy win, and the trophy, when Rhett Fulton, St. Gabriel, La., fouled at the start handing the win to Maris while Leibham, Tomball, Texas, took out former division champion Keith Raftery, Lake Charles, La., in the division's Suburban Chevrolet Top Sportsman class.  Leibham drove his '01 Camaro to a lap of 7.071, seconds at 194.77 mph to the quicker Raftery at 6.773 seconds.

John Slater and Benji Gibson were the two other Texas racers scoring wins at the Motorplex as Slater, Katy, Texas, beat Joe Collier, Clyde, Texas, in Super Gas and Gibson, Euless, Texas, won in Sportsman Motorcycle presented by Harley Davidson.  Slater went 168.72 mph in his '03 Grand Am for the win and Gibson clocked in at 155.24 mph on his '05 Hayabusa to defeat Kyle Olson, Moorland, Iowa.

The Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster class went to David Oenes, Henderson, Colo., running 6.294 seconds, 202.82 mph against Mike Weaver, Highlands, Texas, with a 6.912, 194.77 mph run.

Stock and Super Stock saw Louisiana residents Jimmy Hidalgo Jr. and Larry Cummings come out on top.  Hidalgo won over Darrell Erwin, Kennedale, Texas, in 10.395 seconds with his '02 Firebird and Cummings of Hammond, La., ran down Pete Perry, Bowie, Texas with an 8.471, 159.02 mph lap.

Defending Super Comp Lucas Oil National Champion Gary Stinnett, Emporia, Kan., continued his winning ways taking the win over Westley Scott, Greenville, Texas, and Dan Clary, Mustang, Okla., rounded out the winners against Greg Parson in Super Street.  Stinnett went 8.914, 180.36 for his first win of the year and Clary went 134.85 mph in his '66 Nova also picking up his first win of 2012.

Lucas Oil South Central Division racers head south to Houston and Royal Purple Raceway for this weekend's NHRA Full Throttle Drag Racing Series event April 27-29.

ENNIS, Texas – Racing kicked off today for the NHRA South Central division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Old Scholl Showdown at Texas Motorplex with more than 400 racers in eleven classes expected to battle the quarter mile this weekend. 

Racers in Comp Eliminator took to the track today for two qualifying session along with the Suburban Chevrolet Top Sportsman and Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster classes.  All three classes will have a final qualifying session on Saturday followed by round 1 of eliminations at 5 p.m. 

Saturday will be highlighted by the "Old School Showdown" featuring hot rods from the Texas Blown Fuel Association, the Southwest Jr Fuel Association and an old school, match race between AA Fuel nostalgia funny cars.

Gates open at 8 a.m. for the Lucas Oil event and the Showdown starts at 4 p.m. with Opening Ceremonies.  Tickets are $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children 6-15are just $10 and kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. ENNIS, Texas - Texas Motorplex host the Old School Showdown in Texas, the second stop for the South Central Division, on April 20-22, 2012. The event is one of 43 scheduled across the country where drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $519,000. Categories include Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division's Suburban Chevrolet Top Sportsman Series, Sunset Racecraft Top Dragster Series and NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also run in conjunction with the event.

Gates at Texas Motorplex open at 8 a.m. each day. Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman qualify twice on Friday at noon and 4 p.m. and have one session on Saturday at noon. Eliminations begin Saturday at 2 p.m. and continue Sunday at 9 a.m.  Top Dragster, Comp Eliminator and Top Sportsman run round one at 5 p.m. on Saturday and start round two Sunday 10 a.m.

BONUS PROGRAMS: NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES POINTS FUND: a $519000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2012 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional, regional and national champions.  Regional awards: include $10,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions with Divisional awards of  $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance.  The 2012 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster.  The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2012 Jegs Allstars.  Points are based on in-division races only. 

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions.  Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece.  Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants. Any 2012 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

SUBURBAN CHEVROLET Top Sportsman Series: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships.  The top points finisher will earn a year-end bonus of $1,500, the runner-up will get $1000 and the third place finisher will receive $500.  Top Sportsman racers may run the six South Central Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in the other NHRA divisions.

SUNSET RACECRAFT TOP DRAGSTER SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Dragster class are vying for division championships.  The top points finisher will earn a year-end bonus of $1,500, the runner-up will get $1000 and the third place finisher will receive $500.

NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships.  The $14,000 champions' purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
