Sunday

Monroe Guest, Mannford, Okla., took home the championship trophy in Top Alcohol Dragster after defeating Forrest Fair, Haughton, La., who broke in the final round.  In Top Alcohol Funny Car, Chris Foster, Davenport, Iowa, defeated Tony Bartone, Long Island City, N.Y., who just came off a win from the NHRA Winternationals in Pomona last week.  Foster drove his '11 Mustang to a 5.608 second, 257.04 mph victory. 

In the Comp, Stock Eliminator and Super Street classes, it was a few Texans who were victorious in the finals.  The Comp Eliminator class saw Keith Hall, Ravenna, Texas, drive his '05 Cavalier to an 8.393 second, 148.41 mph victory over the 2010 South Central division champion, Joey Tanksley, Greenwell Springs, La.  A resident of Friendswood, Texas, Harvey Emmons III, defeated the Ponchatoula, La., resident, Slate Cummings in Stock.  Emmons drove his '69 Camaro to victory at 10.214 seconds, 128.75 mph.  Another Texan resident was victorious in Super Street over the weekend.  Scott Turnbough, Mansfield, Texas drove his '63 Falcon for 10.913 seconds at 139.99 mph to defeat Charlie Owens, White Oak, Texas. 

In Super Stock, Slate Cummings made the trip from Hammond, La., to take home the championship trophy over the weekend.  Cummings defeated Chris Chaney, Claremore, Okla., in his '04 Cavalier with a final run of 9.108 seconds at 136.10 mph.  Fellow Louisiana resident, Allen Constantine, La Place, La., won in Super Comp.  Constantine drove his '08 Mullis to an 8.910 second, 183.19 mph victory over David Dale, Lake Jackson, Texas.

Val Torres, Jr., the reigning Pacific Division champion in Super Gas, defeated Jimmy Lewis in the final round yesterday.  Torres, Chino Hills, Calif., drove his '84 Camaro for the win. 

The Sportsman Motorcycle class had driver Raegan Gentili, Crosby, Texas defeat Lee Paterson in the final round with a 9.305 second, 140.52 mph run.  In Top Dragster, Jimmy Arabie, Baytown, Texas, drove his dragster to a 6.810 second, 196.53 mph victory over David Strain, Kenner, La.  Vincent Catalanotto joins the list of Louisiana resident winners this weekend with his victory in Top Sportsman.  Catalanotto drove his '02 Camaro for 7.234 seconds at 182.38 mph to defeat Joseph Mohana, Bourg, La.

Royal Purple Raceway hosts the NHRA Texas Sportsman Challenge on March 4-6, 2011. The event is the first of six scheduled in the South Central Division where NHRA Lucas Oil drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000.

Gates at Royal Purple Raceway open at 9 a.m. Friday and Saturday and 8 a.m. on Sunday.  Qualifying and time trials start at 9 a.m. Friday and continue at 9 a.m. Saturday.  Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Comp Eliminator qualify at noon and 3 p.m. on Friday and noon on Saturday.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car qualify on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. on Saturday.  Top Dragster, Top Sportsman and Comp Eliminator first round of eliminations begin Saturday at 4 p.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car run first round at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday. Eliminations continue Sunday at 9 a.m. with Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car running their second round at 11 a.m.

Tickets for the Texas Sportsman Challenge event at Royal Purple Raceway are $15 Friday, $20 Saturday and $20 Sunday.  Children, 12 years old and under are admitted free with a paid adult.

NHRA TEXAS SPORTSMAN CHALLENGE: Fact Sheet

WHAT: NHRA Texas Sportsman Challenge is the first of six events in South Central Division competition where NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series drivers earn points leading to divisional and national championships as well as a chance at a share of the year-end purse of more than $560,000.  Categories include Top Alcohol Dragster, Top Alcohol Funny Car, Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock Eliminator, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street. The division's Suburban Chevrolet Top Sportsman Series, TCI Comp Cams Top Dragster Series and NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson will also be run in conjunction with the event.

 

WHERE: Royal Purple Raceway, Baytown, Texas.  Track is located at 2525 South FM 565.  It is east of the Houston Metro area, just south of Interstate 10 and east of Highway 146

- a $561,000 point fund from Lucas Oil, which will be shared by 2011 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series divisional champions and national champions.  Divisional awards include $8,500 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions; $3,000 to the champions in both Competition and Super Stock; $2,000 each to the champions in Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street.  The seven national champions will share a bonus of $135,000.

JEGS ALLSTARS: The best of the best from each of NHRA's seven divisions will compete for a share of the $119,000 point fund from Jegs High Performance.  The 2011 Jegs Allstars event will culminate a year-long points battle between drivers in each of NHRA's Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series' eight classes as well as Top Sportsman and Top Dragster.  The top points earner in each category will qualify to represent his/her division at the 2011 Jegs Allstars during the O'Reilly Auto Parts Route 66 NHRA Nationals, July 7-10, 2011.  Points are based on in-division races only. 

The winning division's team will share $20,000 and individual awards include $7,000 each to the Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car champions, $6,000 to champions in Comp Eliminator and Super Stock, $5,000 to Top Sportsman and Top Dragster champions, and $4,500 to the Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas, and Super Street champions.  Runners-up in all categories will earn $2,000 apiece.  Each Allstars competitor will also receive a share of a $25,000 towing fund to get to the event.

Event sponsor, Jegs High Performance, is offering a "double up" bonus to Jegs Allstars participants.  Any 2010 Jegs Allstars champion who also wins the national event will have his/her Allstars prize doubled.

SUBURBAN CHEVROLET Top Sportsman Series: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Sportsman class are vying for division championships.  The top points finisher will earn a year-end bonus of $1,500, the runner-up will get $1000 and the third place finisher will receive $500.  Top Sportsman racers may run the six South Central Division Lucas Oil events as well as three Lucas Oil Series races in the other NHRA divisions.

TCI COMP CAMS TOP DRAGSTER SERIES: Run in conjunction with the Lucas Oil Series, competitors in the Top Dragster class are vying for division championships.  The top points finisher will earn a year-end bonus of $1,500, the runner-up will get $1000 and the third place finisher will receive $500.

NHRA SPORTSMAN MOTORCYCLE SERIES presented by HARLEY DAVIDSON: The NHRA Sportsman Motorcycle Series presented by Harley Davidson, run in conjunction with the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, is an opportunity for competitors in NHRA's Sportsman Motorcycle class to earn points toward divisional championships.  The $14,000 champions' purse posted by Harley Davidson will be paid to 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place points finishers in NHRA divisions that host Sportsman Motorcycles.
