FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Jersey boys DeAngelis and Manzo get delayed Englishtown wins

RISING SUN, Md. - In the final results from the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event originally scheduled to conclude August 10 at Old Bridge Township Raceway Park in Englishtown, N.J., Top Alcohol Dragster driver Dave DeAngelis and Top Alcohol Funny Car driver Frank Manzo both won in their respective fields.

In Top Alcohol Dragster, De Angelis of Middlesex, N.J., defeated Fran Monaghan Jr., of Meadowbrook, Pa., with a time of 5.615 seconds at 250.23 mph, to earn his first ever Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series win.

"When I realized I was out on him, I thought I'd red-lighted," said DeAngelis. "I didn't even know I'd won until my crew and family started to congratulate me. I still can't believe it," added a smiling DeAngelis.

On his road to the final, De Angelis eliminated No. 1 qualifier Rich McPhillips before then receiving a bye in the semifinals after current Northeast Division points leader Doug Foley, broke. Monaghan, who already has appeared in two finals this year, defeated defending National Champion Arthur Gallant in Round 1 and Atco Raceway winner Mike Kosky in the semifinals.

The final in Top Alcohol Funny Car featured two familiar faces on the NHRA Northeast Division tour, reining national champ Frank Manzo of Morganville, N.J., and Schenectady, N.Y., racer Bob Newberry.

Manzo, the defending race champion, opened eliminations by defeating class newcomer, Dan Pomponio of Berlin, N.J., before then taking out former North Central Division runner, Todd Veney of Indianapolis, Ind., in the semifinals.

In his opening round contest, Newberry defeated Holbrook, Mass., racer Fred Tigges. In the semifinals, Newberry took out Whiteford, Md., racer Darrell Cox.

After breaking some parts in the opening round of qualifying for the Cecil County Lucas Oil event, Newberry was unable to return for the final, giving the automatic win to Manzo, who thundered to a 5.651 second pass at 255.58 mph on his single run.

"It's unfortunate that Bob was not able to return for the final. I would have liked to have given the fans a good race to watch, but we're still very happy to have won. It was important for us to get this win in order to stay in the points chase," said Manzo.

In Competition Eliminator, Sal Biondo captured his second win of the year in the class, when he defeated Tom Ciccarone Jr. Ciccarone, who made is debut in Competition Eliminator at Englishtown, won this event last year in Super Comp. In the final, Biondo, of Maspeth, N.Y., defeated Ciccarone of West Chester, Pa., with a time of 8.472 seconds at 147.01 mph. This win helps Biondo in his bid for the NHRA Northeast Division Championship. Prior to today's win Biondo was trailing former division champ Frank Aragona, Jr., for the points lead.

In Super Stock, Angelo Ditocco of Mahopac, N.Y., claimed his first win of the year over fellow New Yorker, Billy Leber Jr., of Tonawanda. In the final, Ditocco ran 10.067 at 122.34 to defeat Leber who ran 9.220 seconds at 140.69 mph.

Biondo, who also won today in Competition Eliminator over Tom Ciccarone Jr., ran 11.872 seconds at 111.22, to Bernard's winning pass of 12.329 seconds at 105.23 mph.

NHRA Lucas Oil racers head to Raceway Park

ENGLISHTOWN, N.J. - Old Bridge Township Raceway Park will host a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series, August 8-10. The event is the sixth of seven in NHRA Northeast division competition and drivers are competing for points leading to national and divisional championships.

The division's season opener in Reading, Pa., was postponed by rain and will be completed in September. At the second race, in Delmar, Del., Top Alcohol Dragster (TAD) driver Fran Monaghan took his first career win while defending Top Alcohol Funny Car (TAFC) national champion Frank Manzo won his first divisional event of the season.

At Atco Raceway, the division's third event, TAD pilot Mike Kosky took the win and Michael Ferro drove his TAFC to the winner's circle.

The fourth race on the schedule was at Lebanon Valley Dragway in Lebanon, N.Y., and produced yet another first time winner, TAD driver Richard Bourke. Manzo won his second divisional of the season.

This year, Manzo is going for his 14th Northeast division championship and his eighth national title. In 2002, the Morganville, N.J., racer earned his sixth consecutive national championship and his eighth straight division crown.

Manzo dominated the Northeast last year winning six out of the seven events and four NHRA national events. But this season it looks like the longtime rivalry between Manzo and Bob Newberry is heating up and Newberry could put the pressure on the champ. Newberry, a Schenectady, N.Y., resident, has found some consistency and is racing well this season.

At this race a year ago, West Coast racer Duane Shields of Las Vegas took the win in TAD over Monaghan, and in TAFC Manzo beat Newberry.

Gates at Raceway Park open at 8 a.m. every day. Qualifying and time trials for Comp Eliminator, Super Stock, Stock, Super Comp, Super Gas and Super Street start at 10 a.m. Friday and continue Saturday at 10 a.m. Drivers in Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will each have two qualifying sessions Saturday, at 3 and 6 p.m. Eliminations begin Sunday at 10 a.m. Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run their first rounds at noon.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series at Raceway Park are $14 Friday, $18 Saturday, and $20 Sunday. A two-day pass is $30 and a three-day ticket is $45. Children 6 to 11 are $5 each day and kids 5 and under are admitted free with a paid adult. All tickets include a pit pass.

Raceway Park is located at 230 Pension Rd. in Englishtown, N.J. Take the New Jersey Turnpike to Exit 9 and follow the signs to Route 18 South. Go six miles to the Englishtown exit. Take Route 527 South five miles and turn left on to Pension Road. The track entrance is on the left. For more information call Raceway Park, (732) 446-7800, or visit www.RacewayPark.com.

Although the next NHRA Northeast division Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Aug. 22-24 at Cecil County Dragway in Rising Sun, Md., is technically the last race on the division's schedule, racers will head back to Maple Grove Raceway in Reading, Pa., Sept. 20 to complete the race that was rained out May 22-25.
